Women's Water Polo Beats Chapman, Falls to No. 16 Long Beach State

LONG BEACH and ORANGE, Calif. – Brown University women's water polo continued its road trip through the state of California with a 17-7 win over Chapman University and a 12-4 setback to No. 16 Long Beach State University on Thursday at Allred Pool and the Lindgren Aquatics Center respectively.
Competing on day six and in games seven and eight of their seven-day, nine-game West Coast swing, the Bears (14-3) topped the Panthers (6-16) – the No. 5 ranked team in Division III – in their second game of the day after falling to the nationally ranked 49ers (13-9) in their opener. Brown moved to 6-2 on its trip.
Freshman goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 22 saves between the two games. Senior Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored five goals against Chapman, and senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) totaled a team-high six goals on the day.
Next, Brown concludes its spring break road trip tomorrow, Friday, Mar. 31, at Concordia University Irvine at 4:30 p.m. ET.
Game 1 – No. 16 Long Beach State 12, Brown 4
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) scored two goals, but Brown fell to No. 16 Long Beach State, 12-4, in its first game of the day and the seventh game of its road trip on Thursday afternoon at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
The Bears remained within 6-2 at halftime, but the host 49ers did not allow the visitors to pull any closer than 8-3 in the second half.
Sophomore McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) totaled a goal, three ejections drawn, and two steals while classmate Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) tallied a goal and a steal.
Junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) notched an assist and three steals, sophomore Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) drew three ejections to go with an assist, and freshman Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) added two steals.
In the cage, freshman goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) stopped eight shots.
After LBSU netted the game's first goal, Kolokotronis responded to tie the score at 1-1 less than two minutes into the game. The 49ers scored the contest's next five goals – two in the first quarter and three in the second stanza – to pull ahead 6-1 with 43 seconds remaining in the half.
Kolokotronis converted again for the Bears with 19 seconds to play in the first half, cutting the visitors' deficit to 6-2 at the break.
Long Beach charted the third quarter's first two goals to go ahead 8-2 before Miller scored on the power play with 28 seconds to go in the frame to pull Brown within 8-3 heading to the fourth quarter.
The 49ers registered three straight goals to open the final period, taking an 11-3 edge. A power play goal from Woo with 2:29 left made it 11-4 before the hosts netted the game's final tally with 26 seconds to play.

Game 2 – Brown 17, Chapman 7
ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored five goals, freshman goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 14 saves, and Brown defeated Chapman, 17-7, on Thursday night at Allred Pool in its second game of the day and the eighth of its West Coast trip.
The Bears grabbed a 6-1 lead in the first quarter, led 10-3 at halftime, and earned their first double-digit advantage over the Panthers – the No. 5 ranked team in Division III – at 13-3 in the third quarter.
Senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) supported Crowley with four goals while sophomore Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) netted three goals.
Sophomore Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) tallied two goals, and junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomores McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) and Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) each added a single tally.
Heilman and Woo each dished out a team-high two assists while Heilman came up with a team-best three steals. Crowley and Miller each added two steals, Miller notched two field blocks, and Woo drew two ejections.
Brown took an early 2-0 lead behind goals from Crowley and McDougal before the Panthers scored on a 5-meter penalty shot. The Bears netted the next four goals as McDouga, Crowley, Heilman, and Woo scored in order to push Brown ahead 6-1. The visitors still led 6-2 at the end of the opening frame.
Rosas started the second quarter's scoring, and a goal from Kolokotronis extended Brown's lead to 8-2. Following another 5-meter penalty shot from Chapman, Crowley and McDougal netted the frame's final two goals to stretch the Bears' edge to 10-3 at halftime.
The Bears opened the third quarter with three straight goals from Crowley, Kolokotronis, and Miller to stretch their lead to 13-3, Chapman answered with three straight goals of their own, including two on the power play and one on a 5-meter penalty shot to pull within 13-6. A power play goal from Woo gave Brown a 14-6 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
In the final stanza, Kolokotronis scored twice, and Crowley added a marker as Brown maintained a 10-goal lead.
