
Women's Water Polo Sweeps Past La Verne, Whittier as Road Trip Continues

LA VERNE and WHITTIER, Calif. – Brown University women's water polo defeated the University of La Verne, 16-9, and clipped Whittier College, 6-5, as it continued its road swing through the state of California on Tuesday at Las Flores Pool and the Slade Aquatic Center respectively.
The Bears (13-2) used a 6-0 run in the first half en route to their win over the Leopards (9-7) – the No. 3 ranked team in Division III – in their morning game prior to relying on key defensive stops in their victory over the Poets (10-14) – the No. 2 ranked team in Division III – in their night cap.
Sophomore Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) led the Bears with eight goals on the day, including six goals against La Verne, as Brown played in its fourth day and fifth and sixth games of its seven-day, nine-game West Coast trip.
Next, Brown continues its spring break road trip on Thursday, Mar. 30, with games at Long Beach State at 3:00 p.m. ET and at Chapman at 9:00 p.m. ET.
Game 1 – Brown 16, La Verne 9
LA VERNE, Calif. – Sophomore Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) scored six goals to propel Brown to a 16-9 win over La Verne – the No. 3 ranked team in Division III – at Las Flores Pool on Tuesday morning in its first game of the day.
The Bears took an 8-2 lead in the second quarter behind six straight goals and outscored the host Leopards, 6-2, to close the game after La Verne pulled within 10-7 in the third quarter.
Rosas paced eight goal scorers for the Bears while senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.), and sophomore Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) each netted two goals.
Senior Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.), sophomores Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) and McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.), and freshman Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) added one goal apiece.
Freshman goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made seven saves.
Kolokotronis and Crowley gave Brown a 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals before La Verne knotted the game at 2-2. The Bears answered with the game's next six goals with four coming in the first quarter.
Kolokotronis started the run before McDougal scored off a feed from Atwell. Rosas then scored back-to-back goals, including off another assist from Atwell to push Brown ahead 6-2 after the first quarter.
Rosas opened the second quarter with her third straight goal off an assist from Kolokotronis, and Atwell closed the 6-0 run to give the Bears an 8-2 edge. Rosas converted in between a pair of Leopard markers before Heilman scored via an Atwell pass to stretch the visitors' advantage to 10-4 at halftime.
La Verne netted three straight goals to start the third quarter, including off a 5-meter penalty shot, to trim its deficit to 10-7. Heilman responded with a power play goal, and Rosas scored off a Heilman pass to extend Brown's lead to 12-7 heading to the fourth quarter.
After the Leopards scored off another 5-meter, Rosas netted a goal off a Miller assist to keep the score at 13-8. La Verne made the score 13-9, but back-to-back goals from Woo before a tally from Miller provided the Bears with insurance.

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Bears' defense allowed just two goals through the first three quarters and made a critical late stop to lead Brown to a 6-5 victory over Whittier – the No. 2 ranked team in Division III – on Tuesday night at the Slade Aquatic Center in its second game of the day.
The Bears took a 6-2 lead through three quarters, and after the host Poets pulled within 6-5 in the fourth frame, Brown came up with a key 6-on-5 stop in the contest's final 20 seconds to close the win.

Rosas converted through traffic to open the game's scoring before the Poets tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal. The Bears then blanked the hosts for the remainder of the half and scored three goals to take a 4-1 lead at the break.
Rosas started the 3-0 run with a goal on the inside before Atwell netted a goal in a 6-on-5 to give the Bears a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. Kolokotronis tallied the second quarter's only goal to push the visitors ahead 4-1.
After Whittier initiated the second half's scoring, the Bears answered with two straight goals to close the third quarter as Heilman scored from up top on the power play and Miller netted the frame's final tally to keep Brown up 6-2.
The Poets scored all three of the fourth quarter's goals to pull within 6-5, but the Bears made a key 6-on-5 stop in the game's waning moments to seal the victory.
