
Women's Water Polo Sweeps Past Villanova, Azusa Pacific at Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's water polo defeated Villanova University, 13-7, and clipped Azusa Pacific University in overtime, 4-3, to improve to 4-0 in Bruno Classic play at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday.
In their second day of competition at the Bruno Classic, the Bears (4-0) topped the Wildcats (0-1) with a 9-2 run in the visitors' season opener before edging the Cougars (1-1) behind a defense that allowed just three goals over 38 minutes of gameplay.
Sophomore Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) led the Bears with five goals on the day while junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomore Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) each netted four goals.
Junior goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made 12 saves in the hosts' victory over Azusa Pacific.
Next, Brown concludes play at the Bruno Classic tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 5, with an exhibition against Indiana at 3:00 p.m.
Game 1 – Brown 13, Villanova 7
McDougal and Rosas each scored four goals to lead Brown to a 13-7 win over Villanova on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Bruno Classic.
The Bears outscored the Wildcats 8-2 over the second and third quarters to bring an 11-4 advantage into the final frame.
Senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) and Heilman netted two goals apiece, and freshman Hannah Eliot (Los Angeles, Calif.) added a single tally.
Freshman goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made eight saves for the Bears.
McDougal and Heilman each found the back of the net in between a Villanova goal to give the Bears an early 2-1 lead. A marker from Eliot pushed Brown ahead 3-2 after the first quarter and started a 5-0 run.
The Bears scored the first four goals of the second quarter with Rosas depositing a pair of goals and McDougal and Kolokotronis each adding a goal, including a lob shot tally from Kolokotronis. The Wildcats netted the half's final goal as Brown brought a 7-3 edge into the break.
Rosas registered the first two goals of the second half to extend the Bears' advantage to 9-3. After a Villanova tally, McDougal and Heilman each netted goals to push Brown ahead 11-4 heading to the final frame.
Kolokotronis and McDougal each scored one goal in the fourth quarter to close out the win.

Game 2 – Brown 4, Azusa Pacific 3 (OT)
Dakan made 12 saves and allowed just three goals while Heilman scored the game-winning goal in overtime to propel Brown to a 4-3 win over Azusa Pacific in its fourth game at the Bruno Classic on Saturday night.
Dakan and the Bears' defense permitted just three goals over 38 minutes of play and did not give up a tally in the six minutes of overtime.
Heilman finished the game with two goals while Rosas and Kolokotronis each found the back of the net once apiece.
Brown opened the game with a 1-0 lead behind a goal from Rosas before the Cougars tied it at 1-1 heading to the second quarter. A goal from Heilman in the second stanza gave the Bears a 2-1 halftime edge.
After a scoreless third quarter, APU tied the game, 2-2, on the power play at the 7:29 mark of the fourth quarter. The Bears responded as Kolokotronis beat two defenders and the goalie to a ball on the inside and finished off a pass from Heilman to put Brown up 3-2 with 3:54 to go in regulation. Azusa Pacific sent the game to overtime with a 6-on-5 goal with 3:05 to play in the fourth.
With 1:32 on the clock in the first overtime period, Heilman received a pass from Kolokotronis and sent a shot into the back of the net from beyond the 5-meter mark. The Bears kept the Cougars off the scoreboard in both bonus periods.
