PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's water polo closed out the 2017 Bruno Classic, dropping a 9-5 decision to Indiana University in an exhibition contest at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears (4-0) remained within 5-4 of the Hoosiers (6-2) midway through the third quarter before the visitors used a 4-0 run to gain separation. Brown won its previous four games at its season-opening tournament.
Sophomore Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) scored a team-high two goals while freshman Hannah Eliot (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied a goal and an assist. Sophomore McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) dished out a team-best two assists.
Freshman Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) and sophomore Audrey Flower (Portola Valley, Calif.) each netted one goal while junior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) and sophomore Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif) posted one assist apiece.
In the cage, junior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made eight saves, and freshman goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) stopped one shot.
After Indiana opened the game's scoring just over a minute into the contest, Rosas scored on the inside after receiving a feed from Kolokotronis, knotting the score at 1-1 at the 2:39 mark of the first quarter. The Hoosiers scored just before time expired to bring a 2-1 edge into the second stanza.
Eliot tied the game at 2-2 with 5:01 left in the second quarter, scoring on the power play on the right side off a pass from Miller. Indiana regained a 3-2 edge with 1:45 to go until halftime, but a point-blank save from Dakan with a minute left kept the score the same heading to the break.
Both teams netted two goals in the first 2:21 of the third quarter before the Hoosiers scored three straight goals to pull ahead 8-4 heading to the final frame. Rosas brought Brown within 4-3 just over a minute into the second half with a quick shot at two meters off an Eliot pass. Atwell later cut the deficit to 5-4 at the 5:39 mark of the third with a 6-on-5 goal from the right side via a Woo feed.
Indiana completed its 4-0 run with a goal midway through the fourth quarter before Flower closed the game's scoring with a tally from the right side off a pass from Miller with 1:49 to play.
Next, Brown returns to play at the Harvard Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 4 with games against Marist (8:45 a.m.), Toronto (1:45 p.m.), and Siena (6:45 p.m.).
