
Women's Water Polo Opens Season with Wins over McKendree, Iona

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's water polo opened its 2017 season with a pair of wins defeating McKendree University, 13-4, and Iona College, 12-10, on opening day at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Friday night.
On the first day of the Bruno Classic, the Bears (2-0) topped the Bearcats (0-1) in their season opener before edging the Gaels (0-1) in their second game of the evening.
Sophomore Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) led Brown with five goals on the day while junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomore Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) each netted five goals between the two games.
Next, Brown continues play at the Bruno Classic tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 4, against Villanova at 1:50 p.m. and Azusa Pacific at 6:30 p.m.
Game 1 – Brown 13, McKendree 4
Nine different Bears found the back of the net as Brown beat McKendree in its first game as a program, 13-4, in its season debut on Friday night.
The Bears held a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and gained a 10-1 edge in the third quarter en route to the victory over the Bearcats who will gain full NCAA status beginning in the 2017-18 academic year.
Woo, sophomores McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) and Tiffany Zhao (Beaverton, Ore.) and freshman Hannah Eliot (Los Angeles, Calif.) each netted two goals.
Heilman, Rosas, senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.), sophomore Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.), and freshman Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) each added one goal.
The Bears took a 6-0 advantage after the first quarter behind consecutive goals from Koloktronis, Rosas, Woo twice, Miller, and Eliot.
In the second quarter, Atwell pushed the hosts' edge to 7-0 before McKendree netted its first goal. Zhao and McDougal closed the half with goals as Brown led 9-1 at the break.
Heilman posted Brown's lone goal of the third quarter as the Bears led 10-2 after three. Zhao, Miller, and Eliot provided the Bears' goals in the fourth quarter.

Game 2 – Brown 12, Iona 10
Heilman scored three goals in the final 8:03 as Brown broke an 8-8 tie midway through the fourth quarter on its way to defeating Iona, 12-10, in its second game of the night.
The Bears kept the lead for good after moving ahead 9-8 with 5:05 left despite the Gaels pulling within one goal twice inside of the final four minutes.
Junior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made 11 saves, including seven stops in the second half.
Rosas paced the Bears with four goals while Heilman netted three goals, and Kolokotronis and Woo each scored twice. Senior Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) tacked on a goal for the Bears.
The two teams traded goals throughout the first half, standing tied at 3-3 after one quarter and 5-5 at halftime. Rosas netted two goals in the first quarter alongside a Kolokotronis tally before Rosas and Crowley posted one goal apiece in the second stanza.
Brown and Iona remain tied at 7-7 late in the third quarter despite goals from Kolokotronis and Woo before Heilman pushed Brown ahead 8-7 heading to the fourth quarter.
After Iona tied it at 8-8, Heilman answered with a no-look, behind-the-back shot from five meters to give the Bears a 9-8 lead with 5:05 to go. Dakan came up with a save before Woo scored off a lob shot to make it, 10-8, with 4:11 left. The Gaels pulled within 10-9 – before Rosas scored from two meters – and within 11-10 with 58 seconds remaining – before Heilman converted on the inside with 35 seconds to play.
