HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) evened the score in the first period, but Quinnipiac responded with three straight goals as the Brown men's hockey team fell on the road, 4-1, to close the regular season Saturday at High Point Solutions Arena.
Quinnipiac improves to 19-13-2 overall and 13-8-1 in the ECAC. Brown drops to 4-23-2 and 3-18-1 in the conference. Brown, the No. 12 seed, will visit fifth seeded Quinnipiac in the best-of-three first round of the ECAC Tournament next weekend, starting on Friday, March 3 at 7 PM.
Andrew Shortridge stopped 18 shots in the win for Quinnipiac, while rookie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 33 saves on the other end for the Bears.
Nick Jermain opened the scoring at 15:38 in the first period, as he skated through the Brown defense and backhanded a shot past Nieto to put the home side in front, 1-0.
Brown bounced right back, however, as Corcoran notched his team-high 15th goal of the season. Shortridge denied the initial shot, but Corcoran knocked down the rebound in front and quickly tapped home the follow-up bid to even the score, 1-1. Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) earned an assist on the play.
Quinnipiac responded with three goals in the middle frame, including two in the first 2:05 of the period, as Tanner MacMaster and Thomas Aldworth scored consecutive goals within a 1:10 span.
Alex Whelan added a breakaway goal at 7:50 to give the Bobcats a three-goal advantage after the second stanza.
Brown killed three penalties in the third period, holding to Bobcats to 0-for-6 on the power play during the game, but the home side outshot the Bears by a 13-6 margin in frame to seal the win.
Brown will return to Quinnipiac next weekend when they play the Bobcats in a best-of-three series in the first round of the ECAC playoffs.
