
Men's Swimming & Diving Closes Out Second Day of Ivy Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team closed out the second day of the Ivy Championship on Thursday night at Blodgett Pool. Junior Riley Springman (Orlando, Fla.) highlighted the day by breaking the 200 IM school record in the prelims.
"We had some very solid performances tonight in finals," said head coach Chris Ip. "Many of our swimmers and divers were able to adjust and move our team up the scoreboard by improving on their positions from prelims."
In the B Final of the 200 IM, Springman finished third with an NCAA B time of 1:48.24. The Orlando, Fla. native broke the program record in the prelims, finishing in 1:47.28, almost a full second better than the previous record of 1:48.20 Springman set at the 2016 Ivy Championship. Senior Connor Lohman (Prospect, Ky.) also turned in a third-place finish in the C Final of the event with a time of 1:49.62. Freshman Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) was close behind in fourth (1:50.33 - third) while senior Nicholas Johnston (Pleasanton, Calif.) was in sixth (1:50.43).
Senior Daniel Klotz (Berlin, Conn.) posted a fourth-place showing in the A Final of the 50 freestyle with a NCAA B time of 20.05, which is the second-best all-time at Brown. Freshman Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) won the B Final race and also posted a NCAA B cut time (20.10). Sophomore William Steele (Katy, Texas) also made it to the B Final and placed eighth (20.74) while his brother, sophomore Charles Steele (Katy, Texas), finished sixth in the C Final (21.10). Freshman Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) was right after in seventh (21.20).
In 1M diving, senior Jonathon Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) finished fifth in the A Final with 291.95 points. Junior Bryce Campanelli (Palmyra, Va.) also placed fifth in the B final with a mark of 232.15.
To close out the night's action, Klotz, Cline, W. Steele and freshman Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) touched the wall in fifth at 1:20.62 in the 200 freestyle relay.
"We were able to balance our scoring between all four classes," said Ip. "It was a good moving day for Bruno. Our team is focusing in on Friday's preliminary heats with the goal of placing the necessary amount of athletes in the finals to have a significant impact on the team standings."
Day three from the Blodgett Pool starts at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow with preliminary time trials starting with the 400 IM. Finals will begin at 6:00 p.m.
