
Women's Tennis Finishes Second at ECAC Indoor Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Brown women's tennis team finished second at the ECAC Women's Indoor Championship on Sunday. The championship was cut one day short with the cancellation of Friday's matches due to inclement weather. Brown was defeated by Dartmouth, 4-1, on Saturday, and beat Harvard, 4-1, on Sunday. The Bears claimed second place in the tournament with the head-to-head tiebreaker.
In doubles against Dartmouth on Saturday, the Bears were down 1-0 but then senior Dayna Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) and junior Alyza Benotto (Los Angeles, Calif.) won their fourth-straight match in the first spot, by a score of 7-6 (4). Freshmen Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) and Juliana Simon (Los Angeles, Calif.) won the doubles point for Brown with their victory in third doubles, 7-5.
The Big Green won the match with wins in first, third, fifth and sixth singles.
Versus Harvard on Sunday, Lord/Benotto won their fifth straight, taking first doubles, 6-1. The Crimson came back to tie the doubles point with a victory in third doubles, but junior Maddie Stearns (Short Hills, N.J.) and senior Mariska Chamdani (Santa Clara, Calif.) gave the Bears the point with a 6-1 win in second doubles.
Benotto opened singles against Harvard with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the second spot. The Crimson won the next singles match before Jack gave the Bears a 3-1 advantage with a 6-4, 7-6 (1) win in fourth singles. Sophomore Taylor Cosme (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) sealed the win for Brown in sixth singles, with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
The Bears will next compete at Boston College on Friday, Feb. 16 and at Syracuse on Sunday, Feb. 19. Friday's match will begin at 5:00 p.m. while Sunday's contest will begin at 11:00 a.m.
