
Stony Brook Outlasts Brown, 77-64

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Five Stony Brook players scored in double figures, paced by senior guard UC Iroegbu's 14 points, to give the Seawolves (1-4) their first win of the season, 77-64, over Brown (2-2) at Island Federal Credit Union Arena Wednesday evening.
The Seawolves, who played one of the nation's toughest schedules to open the season, connected on 50-percent of their field goals, converting 27-of-54 shots from the field, while Brown was held to 34-percent shooting on 22-of-65 field goals.
Bears' freshman guard Desmond Cambridge (Nashville, TN) registered a career high 17 points to lead all scorers, hitting 5-of-15 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws. He also blocked a season high three shots.
Sophomores Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) and Zach Hunsaker (Orem,UT) chipped in with 12 points each for the Bears, with Anderson being held under 20 points for the first time this season.
The Bears also welcomed the return of junior forward Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario) to the lineup after missing Brown's first three games due to injury. Okolie contributed seven points and five rebounds.
Bears' coach Mike Martin emphasized Brown's rebounding effort and was rewarded with a 43-38 rebounding advantage against taller Seawolves, including 16 offensive rebounds. Junior forward Travis Fuller (Encinitas, CA) grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Bears, while adding five points.
Iroegbu's 14 points came on 5-of-12 shooting from the field, while adding four assists. Akwasi Yeboah and Michael Almonacy had 13 points each, with Almonacy grabbing a team high seven rebounds and converting all eight of his free throws.
Brown grabbed an early 14-8 lead after consecutive treys by Cambridge and Hunsaker at the 16:00 mark. The Bears later fell behind by nine points, 38-29, with 3:34 left in the half following a trey by Stony Brook's Bryan Sekunda, who would finish with 10 points.
A trey by Anderson and a free throw by Fuller to end the half cut Stony Brook's lead to 38-33 at intermission.
After the game was tied five different times in the first nine minutes of the second half, a free throw by Okolie gave Brown its first lead of the half, 51-50, with 10:53 remaining.
Stony Brook quickly answered with a 12-2 run in the next 3:18 to grab a 62-53 lead, capped off by a Sekunda jump shot.
Brown drew to within five points of the Seawolves, 64-59, on a three-point play by Anderson, but Stony Brook quickly built the lead to 12 points, 71-59, to take control of the game.
Brown returns to the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday, November 25 for a home match-up with LIU-Brooklyn. Tip off is 1:00 pm on the Ivy League Network.
