Fencing Teams Combine for 9-3 Record in Season Opener at NFC No. 1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University men's and women's fencing combined for a 9-3 overall record, including a 6-1 mark for the women's side, as the Bears opened their season with Northeast Fencing Conference Meet No. 1 at the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center on Saturday.
In their home opener, the Brown women defeated Boston University (20-7), Sacred Heart (16-11), Smith (20-7), New Hampshire (26-1), Wellesley (17-10), and Massachusetts (23-4) and fell only to Boston College (17-10).
The Bears' men's team went 3-2 on the day, earning victories over Boston University (24-3), New Hampshire (25-2), and Massachusetts (22-5), while dropping decisions to Sacred Heart (18-9) and Boston College (16-11).
The women's foil squad paced the Bears at the event with a 7-0 squad record and 53-10 composite mark. Women's sabre finished with a 6-1 squad mark and 43-20 composite record while women's epee went 35-28 overall and 4-3 as a squad.
For the men, the sabre squad went 31-14 while the epee and foil squads registered identical 30-15 composite records. All three squads notched 3-2 squad marks.
Senior Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) paced the Bears with an 18-1 record in women's foil while her squad teammates freshman Elena Jin (Fremont, Calif.) and junior Ebba Brunnstrom (London, England) supported her with records of 18-2 and 15-5 respectively.
Freshman Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished 19-2 on the day in women's sabre while freshman Sofija Podvisocka (Dublin, Calif.) went 14-6 in women's epee.
Leading the men's team, senior Samuel Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied a 13-2 record in men's epee while both senior Alexander Catoya (Rutherford, N.J.) and freshman Sean Feeney (Riverside, R.I.) went 13-2 in men's sabre. Junior Umar Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) paced the men's foil squad with an 11-2 mark.
Next, Brown competes at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday, Dec. 3.
