NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) and Alec Mehr (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored first-period goals and Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) stopped 44 shots as the Brown men's hockey team topped Yale, 4-1, in Friday night's season opener at Ingalls Rink.
Brown (1-0-0, 1-0-0) snapped a seven-game skid against Yale, while the Bulldogs move to 0-1-0 to open the season.
Nieto stopped a career-high 44 shots, including 17 in the middle period. Sam Tucker registered 21 saves in the loss. Beaudoin also added an assist for the multiple-point effort.
Yale controlled the first half of the opening period, outshooting the Bears by an 8-0 margin, but the visitors killed off a pair of early penalties to keep it scoreless.
Giuttari scored the first goal of the game at 10:06 for his first career tally. After Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) won a clean faceoff, Joe Maguire (Dix Hills, N.Y.) quickly slid a pass across the ice to Giuttari, who rifled a shot from the point and into the back of the net.
Mehr gave the Bears a two-goal lead later in the period at 15:09. Nolan Aibel (Brookville, N.Y.) fought for possession along the Yale bench and was able to hit Mehr in stride, as the rookie then rattled a shot off the crossbar and behind Tucker for his first career goal. Nieto made 14 stops in the opening 20 minutes.
Yale jumped on the scoreboard just 46 seconds into the second period as Phil Kemp scored from in front of the blue line to cut the lead to one, 2-1.
After Brown killed a penalty with six minutes remaining in the contest, Beaudoin and senior Josh McArdle (Roscoe, Ill.) added a pair of empty-net goals to secure the victory.
Yale outshot Brown, 45-25.
