CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Jennifer Caruso scored for the second time in as many games, and junior goalkeeper Christine Etzel posted her third shutout of the season to lead Brown University women's soccer to a 1-0 win at Harvard University on Saturday afternoon at Ohiri Field.
In a match-up of teams that entered the day tied in the Ivy League standings with three points apiece, the Bears (9-4-0, 2-2-0 Ivy) defeated the Crimson (7-7-0, 1-3-0 Ivy) for the first time since October 16, 2010.
Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) netted her goal in the 54th minute, scoring for the third time this season and for the second straight game after registering a goal last weekend against No. 11 Princeton. Seniors Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) each recorded an assist on the play.
Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made four saves in the win (9-4-0) and tallied her 17th career clean sheet, moving into sole possession of third on Brown's career shutouts list. She notched her 25th career win with her twin sister Danielle Etzel playing the first half in goal for the Crimson.
Brown's back line, which included freshman center back Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.), junior left back Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and senior right back Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) helped the Bears register their fourth shutout as a team this fall.
Caruso scored the game's only goal at the 53:24 mark. After the Bears earned a throw-in on their side of midfield, Lehan lofted a long ball into the box where Caruso collected the pass and slotted a shot into the goal from 10 yards.
For the match, Brown held advantages in shots (15-12), shots on goal (7-4), and corner kicks (7-5).
Danielle Etzel stopped three shots in the first half for Harvard while Kat Hess turned aside three shots in the second half in the loss (4-3-0).
One of Harvard's best chances came in the 5th minute as Meg Tveit sent a shot off the crossbar.
One goal has now decided 10 of Brown's 13 games this season. The Bears improved to 21-28-4 in the all-time series with Harvard.
Next, Brown remains on the road playing at Cornell on Oct. 21 at 1:30 p.m.
