SERIES HISTORIES
Brown holds a 7-12-1 all-time record vs. Massachusetts. The Bears and Minutewomen have met in each of the last six seasons with Brown gaining a 4-2 edge in those match-ups. UMass took a 1-0 win in last year's meeting.
Brown carries a 1-0-1 mark all-time against Central Connecticut State. The Bears won 8-0 on Nov. 2, 1995, and the two sides played to a 0-0 draw on Sept. 16, 2007.
GOULD CONTINUES TO PACE THE ATTACK
Senior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) picked up where she left off last season, netting the Bears' first goal of 2016 against Rhode Island. She scored the game-winning goal in Brown's 1-0 win at Lafayette, and dating back to last fall, she has scored eight goals in her last 10 matches. A two-time All-Ivy selection, Gould has played in 54 games with 51 starts and 13 goals in her career.
THE BACKSTOP
Sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) has posted four shutouts in five matches to open the 2016 season, pushing her career total to eight clean sheets. She made a career-high nine saves in Brown's 2-0 (2OT) draw at Buffalo and turned aside a penalty kick in the team's 1-0 win at Lafayette. Etzel leads the Ivy League in goals allowed (one), goals-against average (0.19), save percentage (.957), and shutouts (four).
Last season, she ranked second in the Ivy League in both total saves (75) and save percentage (83.3 percent), finishing the year with four shutouts and a 0.99 goals-against average.
LEHAN ANCHORS BACK, SCORES FIRST GOAL
Junior Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) anchors the Bears' defensive unit from her center back position. Having missed just one game for Brown over her career, she has played every minute in all 37 games in which she has appeared. Lehan entered into the offensive equation for the first time in her career vs. URI, scoring a goal and adding an assist in the team's 3-0 season-opening win.
Lehan's teammates along the back line have included junior Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) and sophomores Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) in addition to freshman Abby Kaplan (Potomac, Md.). Junior Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.) has aided the unit as a defensive midfielder.
WALDMAN ON THE WING
Junior Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) proved dangerous on the attack in Brown's 3-0 win over URI in the opener, playing in several threatening balls from the right wing. She posted two assists against the Rams, tying a career high and pushing her career assist total to seven.
CARCHIO NETS FIRST CAREER GOAL
Freshman midfielder Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal, netting the game winner in Brown's 1-0 win over Stony Brook. She scored in the 31st minute off a header via a corner kick from junior Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.).
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Massachusetts enters the weekend with a 2-3-0 overall record. In their last two outings the Minutewomen have defeated Maine, 1-0, and fallen to Central Michigan, 3-1. Gabriela Kenyon leads the team with two goals while Cassidy Babin has played every minute in net, logging a 2.00 GAA and two shutouts.
Central Connecticut brings a 2-6-0 overall mark into the week prior to a home match vs. Providence College on Thursday. Last week, the Blue Devils earned victories over UMass Lowell, 1-0, and Colgate, 1-0. Four different Blue Devils have scored one goal apiece for CCSU while Nicki Turley has seen the majority of time as the club's goalkeeper, notching a 1.49 GAA and two shutouts.
