Wrestling Announces 2016-17 Schedule on #Rhode2STL

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling sets its sights on the EIWA and NCAA Championships in March with a competitive 2016-17 schedule as the Bears will compete in dual meets and tournaments throughout the Northeast and host seven home matches, including the third annual Beauty and the Beast meet, head coach Todd Beckerman announced on Thursday.
"We have put together another challenging schedule to prepare our team for championship season in March," Beckerman said. "Our student-athletes are really looking forward to the chance to prove themselves both at home in the Pizzitola Sports Center and on the road."
After an unofficial opening with the Brown & White Wrestle-Offs on Nov. 6, the Bears enter into intercollegiate competition with the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open at Binghamton on Nov. 13. Brown then competes at the Navy Classic on Nov. 19 prior to the Journeyman Tussle on Dec. 4.
"We are pleased to add the Journeyman Tussle as an early opportunity to see top-level competition and aim to build momentum throughout the year," Beckerman said. "We also have some great opportunities to showcase our team on our home mat with our Alumni Weekend, Beauty and the Beast, Ivy matches, and Senior Day."
The Bears will host seven dual meets over three weekends between January and February. The team has set its Alumni weekend for Jan. 21-22 with matches against Bloomsburg, Franklin & Marshall, and Bucknell. Brown's Beauty and the Beast meet with Brown gymnastics will take place on Jan. 27 prior to Ivy contests against Cornell and Columbia on Jan. 28. The Bears' match-up with Sacred Heart on Feb. 11 will serve as Senior Day.
"Our home dual meets at the Pizzitola Sports Center this year will provide us both with tremendous opportunities for competition and with a chance to make our alumni and fans proud," Beckerman said. "We are excited to host and celebrate our alumni during our home-opening weekend, and the Beauty and the Beast meet has become a highly-anticipated fan favorite with packed stands every year."
The 2017 EIWA Championships will take place in Lewisburg, Pa., at Bucknell University from March 3-4. The 2017 NCAA Championships will return to St. Louis, Mo., from March 16-18.
"Our focus from preseason throughout the year is on making our mark come March at the conference and national tournaments," Beckerman said. "Each match provides us the opportunity to take on tough competition and prepare us for the postseason."
