PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling recorded the third-highest team GPA in the nation while juniors Justin Staudenmayer and Steven Galiardo earned NWCA All-Academic honors, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced on Monday.
The Bears rank in the top 10 for the fifth straight year after posting a team GPA of 3.360 in 2016. Brown came in fifth in 2015, fourth in 2014, sixth in 2013, and eighth in 2012. Among Ivy League schools, Brown trails only Harvard, which placed first with a 3.412 team GPA.
Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), a Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations concentrator, earned NWCA All-Academic accolades for the second straight year. He has qualified for the NCAA Championships at 157 lbs. in each of the last two years and garnered First Team All-Ivy this season. He finished the year with a 30-10 record including a 13-1 dual mark.
Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.), Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations concentrator, gained NWCA All-Academic laurels for the first time. Galiardo made his first appearance at the NCAA Championships this past March, competing at 149 lbs. He gained Second Team All-Ivy plaudits and went 21-10 on the year, including a 7-2 dual record.
The NWCA determines the team grade-point average using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these came from the wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. The NWCA also uses a system, which combines athletic and academic success, in determining individual qualifiers.
