Softball Presents Team Awards at Annual Year-End Banquet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University softball and head coach Katie Flynn recognized senior Janet Leung as the team's MVP for the second straight year as part of its annual end-of-the-year banquet at the Brown Faculty Club on Tuesday night.
Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) also earned her white letter sweater, the traditional gift bestowed upon Brown's seniors, as the team's only member of the Class of 2016. Juniors Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) and Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) both garnered the team's Zucconi Strength Award.
Freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) gained the team's Most Outstanding First Year Award, and classmate Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) won the team's Bruno Award. All five of the Bears' first-year student-athletes earned their brown letter sweaters, the traditional gift bestowed upon Brown's freshmen.
Team MVP & White Sweater: Janet Leung (Senior, Mississauga, Ontario)
- Finished third all-time at Brown in at bats (493) and fifth in doubles (35) … Started all 151 games over her career.
- In 2016, recorded a .315 batting average, 45 hits, nine doubles, a triple, and two home runs … Ranked fourth in the Ivy League with 28 runs scored.
- Earned an RIAIAW Distinguished Student-Athlete of the Year Award … Gained All-Ivy honors in each of her first three seasons.
Most Outstanding First Year: Ashli Lotz (Freshman, Austin, Texas)
- Started all 41 games in the outfield … Ranked second in the Ivy League in doubles (13).
- Recorded a .316 batting average, 43 hits, 25 RBIs, and 17 runs; stood second on the team in RBIs.
- Posted a .340 on-base percentage and .412 slugging percentage … Compiled 13 multi-hit games.
Zucconi Strength Award: Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) and Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.)
- As selected by strength and conditioning coach Maureen Khairallah for focus and preparation in the weight room.
- Chieffallo: Made 16 appearances with eight starts in the circle … Ranked fifth in the Ivy League with a 2.76 ERA … Earned Ivy League Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 8.
- Schoenewald: Recorded a .319 batting average, 36 hits, 19 runs, nine doubles, a triple, and two home runs on the year … Posted 10 multi-hit games … Earned Ivy League Player of the Week twice (Mar. 1, Mar. 8).
Bruno Award: Meghan Wimmer
- Given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the heart, dedication, and determination of a Brown softball player
Brown Sweaters: Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas), Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.), Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.), Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.), and Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.).
