GOLD RIVER, Calif. – No. 4 Brown University women's crew has earned five CRCA All-Region 1 selections and nine CRCA Scholar-Athlete honorees with senior Muriel Solberg earning honors in both categories, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced on Thursday.
Junior Monika Sobieszek (Stoneham, Mass.) joined Solberg (Rockford, Ill.) on the CRCA All-Region 1 First Team while seniors Ellie Place (Bellevue, Wash.), Sasha Tilles (Redmond, Wash.), and Isabel Runge (Redmond, Wash.) all garnered Second Team All-Region 1 accolades.
Solberg has now gained First Team All-Region plaudits in each of the last three years. She also earned CRCA All-America honors in 2014 and 2015. Place took home All-Region laurels for the second straight year. All five of the Bears' All-Region selections also earned Second Team All-Ivy this season.
Brown's nine CRCA Scholar-Athletes included sophomore Geena Fram (Lawrenceville, N.J.), junior Lucie Hajian (Newton, Mass.), senior Signe Henderson (Berkeley, Calif.), senior Anna Johnson (Lausanne, Switzerland), junior Lia Keyser (Cambridge, Mass.), junior Ruby Moore-Bloom (Berkeley, Calif.), senior Lucia Petty (Hong Kong), Solberg, and junior Maaike Tiersma (Woodinville, Wash.).
Petty and Solberg each earned CRCA Scholar-Athlete status for the third straight year. Hajian, Keyser, Moore-Bloom, and Tiersma gained the distinction in back-to-back seasons while Johnson also won the award in 2014.
The CRCA's All-Region teams are based on a team's regional finish, coaches' recommendations, and 2,000-meter erg scores. To be eligible, student-athletes must have competed in the first varsity eight boat in 75 percent of the team's races. All-Region choices automatically become eligible for CRCA All-America Awards.
To be eligible for a scholar-athlete award, student-athletes must be in their second, third, or fourth year of eligibility, rowed in 75 percent of the team's spring races in an NCAA eligible boat, and maintained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.
