
Women's Water Polo Upends Chapman, 10-9, Falls to APU, 9-8

ORANGE, Calif. – Brown University women's water polo rallied past Chapman University, 10-9, in its nightcap after dropping a 9-8 decision to Azusa Pacific University on Wednesday at the Zee Allred Aquatics Center on the campus of Chapman.
Continuing its road trip in the state of California, the Bears (7-16) used a 5-0 run in the second half to best the host Panthers (8-15) – ranked No. 4 in Division III – after almost topping the Cougars (8-16) earlier in the day.
Junior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Bears' attack on the day, registering nine goals between the two contests. She netted a game-high five goals against Chapman and a game-best four goals vs. APU.
Next, Brown concludes its swing through the Golden State tomorrow with games against San Diego State (6 p.m. ET) and Long Beach State (10 p.m. ET) with both contests occurring on the campus of LBSU.
Game 1: Azusa Pacific 9, Brown 8
Kolokotronis scored a game-high four goals, but Brown fell to Azusa Pacific, 9-8, in its first game of the day at Chapman University.
The Bears held a 5-4 lead at the half and pulled within 9-8 with 3:25 to play, but the Cougars maintained their one-goal edge down the stretch.
Kolokotonis added three steals and an assist while sophomore Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) tallied two goals, two assists, and two steals. Freshman McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) notched a goal and two ejections drawn.
Senior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.) netted a goal, and classmate Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) contributed two assists, four ejections drawn, and two steals.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made eight saves.
After APU took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, Dodd and Kolokotronis scored for the Bears to tie the score at 2-2 with 2:43 to go in the first. The Cougars went ahead 3-2 entering the second frame.
Heilman posted the second stanza's first marker before APU re-gained the lead at 4-3. Kolokotronis registered the first half's final two goals to push Brown ahead 5-4 at halftime.
The Cougars charted the third quarter's first goal before Heilman again tied the game at 6-6 with 5:47 remaining in the third. APU proceeded to build an 8-6 edge heading to the fourth quarter.
APU extended its margin to 9-6 early in the fourth frame before Kolokotronis scored to make it 9-7. Miller's goal cut the Bears' deficit to 9-8 with 3:25 to play, but Brown could not find the equalizer.

Game 2: Brown 10, Chapman 9
Kolokotronis scored a game-high five goals, and Brown used a 5-0 run in the second half to surge past Chapman, 10-9, on Tuesday night.
With its 5-0 run, Brown turned a 7-5 deficit in the third quarter into a 10-7 lead in the fourth frame, streaking past the Panthers, the No. 4 team in Division III.
Kolokotronis added two assists and three steals to her output, and Santiago posted a goal and two steals. Dodd compiled a goal, an assist, a steal, and an ejection drawn while Heilman notched a goal and a steal.
Freshman Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) tallied a goal, an assist, a steal, and an ejection drawn, and senior Victoria Pierotti (Newport Beach, Calif.) logged a goal, an assist, and a steal.
Sophomore goalie Emily Adams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) made 10 saves in the win while Miller aided the defensive cause with a team-high seven steals.
After Chapman gained a 2-0 lead, Kolokotronis scored with 41 seconds left in the first quarter to make it 2-1. Kolokotronis tied it 2-2 midway through the second quarter, and a tally from Santiago with five seconds to play in the half brought Brown within 4-3 at the break.
The Cougars pulled ahead 7-5 with 1:54 left in the third quarter despite markers from Dodd and Kolokotronis.
Brown then began to make its move as goals from Kolokotronis and Heilman inside of the third period's final 1:35 knotted the game at 7-7 heading to the fourth quarter.
In the final frame, Kolokotronis, Pierotti, and Rosas each found the back of the net to give the Bears a 10-7 advantage with 4:26 to go. Chapman trimmed its deficit to 10-9 with 41 seconds on the clock, but Brown stymied the comeback attempt.
