
Women's Water Polo Tops CMS as Part of Monday Split in Golden State

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Brown University women's water polo beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 13-6, in its second game of the day after falling at Pomona-Pitzer, 5-3, on Monday at Axelrood Pool and Haldeman Pool respectively.
In the second and third games of their eight-game California swing, the Bears (6-14) out-scored the Division III No. 6-ranked Athenas (3-15), 9-1, over the second and third quarters en route to their win after dropping the decision to the Sagehens (7-11), the No. 2-ranked team in Division III.
Senior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.), junior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.), and freshman Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) each scored three goals between the two contests.
Next, Brown continues its Golden State road trip with a game at No. 25 CSU Northridge tomorrow – Tuesday, Mar. 29 – at 6 p.m. ET.
Game 1: Pomona-Pitzer 5, Brown 3
Brown tied the game in the third quarter and remained within two goals throughout the game, but Pomona-Pitzer, the No. 2 team in Division III, took a 5-3 decision on Monday afternoon.
Kolokotronis notched one goal and team highs with three steals and three sprints won while Santiago posted one goal and a team-best three ejections drawn.
Sophomore Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.), and senior Victoria Pierotti (Newport Beach, Calif.) added a goal and an assist respectively. Senior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.) totaled two steals and two ejections drawn while freshmen McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) and Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) each picked up two steals.
In net, sophomore goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made eight saves with two steals.
Heilman gave the Bears a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game before the Sagehens pulled ahead 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. After Pomona-Pitzer gained a 3-1 edge, Santiago brought the Bears within 3-2 at the half.
Kolokotronis knotted the contest at 3-3 just over a minute into the third stanza, and the visitors remained within 4-3 through three periods. Brown kept its deficit at one goal prior to the hosts netting a tally with eight seconds to go.

Game 2: Brown 13, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6
Rosas scored a game-high three goals, seven other Bears found the back of the net, and Brown defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Division III's No. 6 team, 13-6 on Monday night.
Supporting Rosas, Dodd, Kolokotronis, and Santiago netted two goals apiece. Heilman, Miller, Woo, and freshman Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) tacked on one goal each.
After CMS went ahead 1-0, Brown rattled off three straight goals to take a 3-1 edge with 3:15 to go in the first quarter. Dodd, Heilman, and Rosas provided the tallies, and the Bears led 3-1 after one.
The visitors out-scored the hosts, 5-1, in the second stanza to pull ahead 8-3 at the break. Brown opened the frame on a 4-0 run behind goals from Woo, Dodd, Santiago, and Rosas. Another goal from Santiago following an Athena marker gave Brown its five-goal halftime edge.
The Bears took further command of the contest with a 4-0 third quarter. Kolokotronis, McDougal, Rosas, and Miller tallied goals in order in the penultimate period.
CMS pulled within 12-6 in the fourth quarter with a 3-0 run before Kolokotronis logged the game's final goal.
