
Miller Scores Four Goals, Women's Water Polo Falls at Whittier 11-8

WHITTIER, Calif. – Freshman McKenna Miller scored a game-high four goals, but Brown University women's water polo fell to Whittier College, 11-8, at the Slade Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon in the first contest of their eight-game California road trip.
The Bears (5-13) tied the game at 3-3 at halftime and remained within 7-6 through three quarters before the host Poets (15-7) – the No. 1-ranked team in the CWPA Division III poll – held on for the win with four goals in the fourth quarter.
Miller (Danville, Calif.) paced the Brown offense while senior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) posted two goals. Sophomore Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.), and freshman Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) each added one goal.
After the Poets took a 3-0 lead through the first quarter, the Bears responded with a 3-0 second quarter to knot the score at 3-3 at the intermission. Heilman started the run midway through the frame before Miller netted back-to-back goals in the final 2:09.
Brown pulled ahead 5-4 with 4:25 to play in the third quarter as Woo and Miller each found the back of the net. Whittier then used three straight goals to take a 7-5 edge prior to Santiago posting a goal with one second on the clock in the third.
The Bears remained within 8-7 early in the fourth frame after another tally from Santiago, but the Poets gained an 11-7 advantage with 34 seconds remaining behind a 3-0 run. Miller logged the game's final goal with 13 seconds to go.
Next, Brown continues its eight-game swing through the state of California on Monday when the Bears play at Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m. ET and at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 10:30 p.m. ET.
