
Women's Water Polo Falls to No. 16 Wagner, 6-3, Despite Strong Defense

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore goalkeeper Marisol Dakan made 15 saves to pace a strong defensive effort, but Brown University women's water polo fell to No. 16 Wagner, 6-3, in the final game of the three-day Bruno Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
The Bears (1-6) remained within 4-3 of the visiting Seahawks (5-6) with three minutes to play in the game before Wagner scored twice inside of the last 2:50.
Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made eight saves in the first half, limiting the Seahawks to two goals, and added seven saves in the second 16 minutes.
Senior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) scored two goals while sophomore Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) contributed a goal and an assist. Senior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.) dished out two assists.
Just 21 seconds into the game, Santiago put Brown up 1-0 with a goal from the left wing off a feed from Dodd. Wagner tied the game at 1-1 at the 4:59 mark of the first quarter before Heilman connected from five meters off another assist from Dodd to give the Bears a 2-1 edge after the first.
Neither team scored over the second quarter's first 7:53 before the Seahawks snuck in a goal off the post with seven seconds to go until halftime, knotting the score at 2-2 at the break.
Wagner went ahead 3-2, but Santiago answered with her second goal of the game – again from the left wing and this time off a pass from Heilman – to draw the Bears level at 3-3 with 5:27 to go in the third stanza. The Seahawks netted a goal with 1:29 remaining in the frame to take a 4-3 edge through three.
Brown remained within one goal until Wagner scored with 2:50 and 1:14 to play to seal the victory.
Next, Brown will play at the UC Davis Aggie Invitational from Feb. 20-21 with games against No. 5 California (Feb. 20, 6 p.m. ET), No. 8 UC Davis (Feb. 20, 9:30 p.m. ET), No. 24 CSU Bakersfield (Feb. 21, 12 p.m. ET), and No. 1 Stanford (Feb. 21, 5 p.m. ET).
