
Women's Water Polo Opens Play at Davis Shootout vs. No. 3 Cal, No. 5 UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – Brown University women's water polo opened play at the 36th Davis Shootout Tournament on Saturday at the Schaal Aquatics Center, falling to No. 3 California, 11-3, and to No. 5 UC Davis, 12-3.
Squaring off with a pair of top-5 opponents, the Bears (1-8) acquitted themselves well, holding both the Golden Bears (13-1) and the host Aggies (10-4) each to four goals in the first half of their respective contests.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) led the Bears' defensive effort with 25 saves between the two games.
Next, Brown concludes action at the Davis Shootout tomorrow vs. No. 24 CSU Bakersfield at noon ET and vs. No. 4 Stanford at 5 p.m. ET.
Game 1: No. 3 California 11, Brown 3
Brown remained within 4-1 of No. 3 California at halftime before eventually falling to the Golden Bears, 11-3, in the team's first game at the Davis Shootout on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) recorded a goal and three ejections drawn while freshman McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) posted a goal and an assist, and classmate Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) added the Bears' other goal.
In net, Dakan made 10 saves in three quarters of play, and sophomore net-minder Emily Adams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) stopped two shots in the fourth quarter.
Senior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) dished out an assist and drew two ejections, freshman Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) tallied a team-high three steals, and sophomore Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) chipped in two steals.
Miller's goal at the 4:55 mark of the first quarter tied the game at 1-1 and helped Brown stay within 2-1 of Cal through one frame. The Bears held the Golden Bears to two goals in the second stanza to keep the score at 4-1 at halftime.
Cal pushed its lead to 8-1 in the third quarter before a marker from Woo with 17 seconds to go in the third frame. The Golden Bears led 9-2 through three quarters.
A goal from Koloktronis with 3:15 remaining pulled Brown within 10-3 before Cal held on for the win.

Game 2: No. 5 UC Davis 12, Brown 3
Dakan made 15 saves, blanking the Aggies in the second quarter, before Brown eventually fell to No. 5 UC Davis, 12-3, on Saturday night in its second game at the Davis Shootout.
Heilman led the Bears with two goals and three steals as the team totaled 14 steals as a team. Kolokotronis made a team-high four steals while Woo notched three steals and two assists. Santiago tacked on two steals, and senior Victoria Pierotti (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored one goal.
The Aggies opened the game with a 4-0 lead in the first quarter before Dakan and the Bears held the hosts without a goal in the second stanza to stay within 4-0 at the half.
Pierotti put the visitors on the board with a goal at the 5:35 mark of the third quarter to cut the Bears' deficit to 6-1. In the fourth quarter, Heilman netted back-to-back goals to bring Brown within 10-3 with 3:48 to play.
