
Wrestling's Rally Falls Short in 21-16 Setback vs. Princeton

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling rallied from a 15-0 deficit to pull within 18-16, but Princeton University held on with a win in the final bout to take a 21-16 team decision on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (3-8, 2-6 EIWA) won four of five bouts in the middle weights to swing momentum in the dual before the visiting Tigers (6-6, 5-3 EIWA) held on with a victory at 174 lbs. The meet began at 184 lbs.
Juniors Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.), sophomore Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.), and freshman Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) each won for the Bears in between the 133 and 165-pound weight classes.
Salvo posted the hosts' first victory with a 10-1 major decision over Noah Ajram at 133 lbs. Salvo tallied a takedown in the first period and added an escape in the second to take a 3-0 lead through two periods. He notched a takedown and a 4-point near fall to pull ahead 9-0 and tacked on a point for riding time.
Galiardo held a 4-0 lead through two frames over Chris Perez at 149 lbs. and still led 4-1 in the third prior to Perez sustaining an injury.
At 157 lbs., Staudenmayer, ranked No. 20, opened with a 2-0 lead before Adam Krop tied the bout at 2-2 through two stanzas. Staudenmayer recorded a 4-point near fall early in the third period to go ahead 6-2 and charted an escape to pull out the 7-6 win.
Viruet registered Brown's third straight win with a 6-4 decision against Judd Ziegler, the older brother of Brown freshman Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.), at 165 lbs. Viruet captured a 4-2 lead with a takedown and a reversal in the second period. He logged a takedown in the third to ensure the victory.
Sophomore Andrew LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) challenged No. 16 Jonathan Schleifer at 174 lbs. before Schleifer grabbed a 9-6 win in the dual's final bout. LaBrie tied the bout at 5-5 with a takedown early in the third period before Schleifer scored an escape, a takedown, and a riding time point in the final period.
Next, Brown competes at Binghamton on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. before hosting Harvard and Roger Williams on Sunday, Feb. 14 beginning at 1 p.m. as part of the Bears' Beauty and the Beast meet with Brown gymnastics.
