
Jones, Palabrica, Koch Pace Fencing at Day One of Ivy Round-Robins

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Simon Jones, junior Alex Palabrica, and sophomore Samuel Koch each finished day one competition in a tie for second in his respective weapon standings to lead Brown University fencing at the 2016 Ivy League Fencing Round-Robins at Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University on Saturday.
The Bears' men's team fell to No. 3 Penn (19-8), Yale (14-13), and No. 5 Harvard (18-9). The women's side dropped decisions to No. 8 Penn (22-5), Yale (17-10), and No. 4 Harvard (25-2).
In day two tomorrow, the Bears' will take on Princeton, Cornell, and Columbia beginning at 10 a.m.
Brown totaled three squad wins on the day with men's epee beating Yale, 7-2 and Harvard, 5-4, and women's epee topping Yale, 6-3.
Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) went 7-2 on the day to tie for second in the men's sabre standings while sophomore Alexander Catoya (Rutherford, N.J.) picked up two wins in men's sabre.
Jones (Louisville, Colo.) and Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) each went 6-3 in men's epee to tie for second in the individual standings. Junior James Yoon (Austin, Texas) added two wins.
In men's foil, senior Kyle Kennedy (Wall, N.J.), freshman Umar Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.), and senior Robert Iverson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) charted three, two, and one win respectively.
Sophomore Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) led the women's side with a 5-4 record in women's epee. Junior Mika Gross (Newton, Mass.) and senior Yoojin Cha (Seoul, South Korea) each tallied two wins.
Seniors Lauren Altman (New York, N.Y.) and Stephanie Hojsak (Tenafly, N.J.) registered two and one win in women's sabre. In women's foil, senior Audrey Lee (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and freshman Ebba Brunnstrom (London, England) each won once.
Next, Brown will conclude competition at the Ivy League Fencing Round-Robins tomorrow before taking part in the Temple Invitational on Feb. 20.
