Men's Swimming & Diving Remains in First After Day Two of Bruno Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team kept its lead in the second day of the Bruno Invitational at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday with 772.5 total points.
"Our second day of the Bruno Invite is in the books and we are still are putting together solid performances from all of our men," said head coach Chris Ip. "The coaching staff challenged our team to make a statement during the morning prelims and place as many Bears in each of the finals heats as possible and they took the challenge. That depth provided us the momentum tonight to maintain some distance from our Ivy League foes."
The Bears opened the night going 1-2 in the 200 medley relay. A team of sophomore William Steele (Katy Texas), sophomore Waylon Jin (Berwyn, Pa.), senior Daniel Klotz (Berlin, Conn.) and senior Jack Nee (Pepper Pike, Ohio) won the event in 1:29.26. Senior Nicholas Johnston (Pleasanton, Calif. ), senior Connor Lohman (Prospect, Ky.), freshman Joon Sung (Los Angles, Calif.) and freshman Cody Cline (Wellngton, Fla.) took second in 1:30.16.
In the 400 IM, sophomore Matt Orringer (Ann Arbor, Mich.) took fifth with a time of 3:59.94, taking second in the dual to Princeton and was first against Dartmouth. Junior Grant Casey (North Attleboro, Mass.) also swam in the event and took ninth overall with a time of 4:03.18, winning the B-final.
Klotz won the 100 butterfly in 47.53 with an NCAA B qualifying time. W. Steele, junior Riley Springman (Orlando, Fla.) and Sung finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, with times of 49.03, 49.59 and 49.69.
Freshman Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) came in fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:39.05) while freshman Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) (1:39.45) and freshman Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) (1:40.21) finished behind him in fifth and sixth, respectively. Cline finished the event in eighth (1:41.90).
In the 100 breaststroke, Brown took fourth-seventh, with Takahashi (56.53-fourth), Christuk (56.66-fifth), Lohman (56.73-sixth) and Jin (56.75-seventh) rounding out the finishes.
N. Brown finished second overall in the 100 backstroke and first in dual meet scoring with a time of 49.65, while Johnston was third overall (49.71) and second in the dual meet. Sullivan (49.79), Sung (51.00) and W. Steele (51.18) placed in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
In diving, senior Jonathon Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) took second overall in the 3-meter with a score of 316.55 and won both dual meets.
The 800 freestyle relay team of Stephens, Cline, Smilenov and freshman Troy Li (Carmel, Ind.) finished fourth with a time of 6:40.16.
After day two, Brown still holds the lead with 772.5 points while Princeton is in second (617) and Columbia is in third (495). Rider (353) and Dartmouth (335.5) round out the teams.
"We expect another solid performance from the team tomorrow to reach our midseason goals," said Ip. "Both the men's and women's programs are very tight and the team bantering going back and forth between events is fueling both teams success."
The Bears will compete in the final day of the invite tomorrow (Dec. 4), with prelims staring at 10:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 5:00 p.m.
