Providence, R.I. - It was 1935 and Franklin Roosevelt was the U.S. President, the Hoover Dam was just completed, the Social Security Act was signed into law, a gallon of gas was 10-cents and the United States was in the midst of the Great Depression.
It was also the last time the Brown men's basketball team won six or more home games to open the season. Until now.
Freshman Joshua Howard (Charlotte, NC) and sophomore Travis Fuller (Encinitas, CA) scored 12 points each to lead Brown to its sixth straight home win to open the season, 89-59 over Johnson & Wales, for the most season-opening home wins since the 1934-35 Brown team won all nine of its home games.
The Bears, who will break for 12 days to take final exams, improve to 7-5 on the season, while Johnson & Wales falls to 2-5 overall.
"We played with great energy and effort in the opening half, something we haven't done in our last two games," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "I really liked our defensive effort. Defense is all focus and energy and we were sparked by the energy of Chris Sullivan and Corey Daugherty tonight."
Fuller connected on 5-of-7 field goals and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, while Howard shot 5-of-9 from the field in scoring his 12 points.
Senior forward Steven Spieth (Dallas, TX) also scored in double figures for the Bears with 10 points, while sophomore Chris Sullivan (Wilmette, IL) added a career high 11 points on 3-of-5 three-point shooting.
Brown senior guard JR Hobbie (Spring Lake, NJ) scored nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the three-point arc and moved into 19th place in career Ivy League treys, now with 216 career three-point baskets.
Sophomore guard Corey Daugherty (Barrington, RI) scored eight points for Brown and his seven assists were a career high. Junior forward Miki Ljuboja (North Riverside, IL) contributed with a career-high seven points for the Bears.
Johnson & Wales' guard Randall Ferdinand had a game-high 15 points for the Lions, while guards Matt Madoian and Edson Dascy chipped in with 13 points each.
Brown jumped out to a 20-5 lead at the 13:14 mark of the opening half following back-to-back treys by Hobbie and Spieth.
The Bears continued to increase their lead over the Lions, taking a 53-21 advantage at the half, on a trey by Daugherty.
After Howard's three-point play gave Brown a 56-21 lead to open the half, the closest Johnson & Wales got in the second half was 25 points, 57-32, with a 12-1 run capped off by a dunk by Madoian with 15:22 left in the game.
After a 12-day break for final exams, Brown returns to the hardwood on December 22, hosting Maine at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The matinee tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
