PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Carly Gould scored in the 34th minute, sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel notched her 10th shutout of the season, and Brown University women's soccer defeated Yale University, 1-0, in its regular season finale at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win over the visiting Bulldogs (6-7-3, 2-4-1 Ivy), the Bears (9-2-5, 4-1-2 Ivy) totaled 14 points to finish second in the Ivy League standings, marking their highest finish in the Ivy standings since winning the league title in 1994.
The Bears earned points in 14 of their 16 matches on the season and finished in the top half of the league standings in back-to-back years for the first time since 1993-94. Brown closed the year with its highest winning percentages both overall (.719) and in conference play (.714) since the year 2000.
In her final game at Stevenson-Pincince Field, Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) scored her fourth goal of the season and the 15th of her career. She finished her Brown career with 64 games played and 60 games started.
After senior Ella Warshauer (Santa Monica, Calif.) played a ball out wide to junior Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) on the right wing, Waldman sent a cross into the goal area where Gould finished off the play with a header inside the left post at 33:52. Waldman tallied her third assist of the season on the play while Warshauer posted her first helper of the year.
Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made four saves, including back-to-back stops in the 53rd and 54th minutes, to post her 10th clean sheet of the season, giving her sole possession of second place on Brown's single-season shutout list, trailing only the 12 shutouts of Kathy Kostic '87 in 1984.
Etzel earned her ninth win (9-2-5) to cap off a historic season. She finished the year with a 0.36 goals-against average, ranking behind only Kostic's 0.21 GAA in 1984 in the Brown record book. Her save percentage of 0.921 on the year stands third behind Kostic's 0.965 mark in 1984 and Mary Jo Markle '02's mark of 0.932 in 2000.
Brown's back four of senior Sydney Calas (Bethesda, Md.), juniors Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.), and sophomore Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) helped the Bears to another clean sheet.
For the season, Brown allowed just seven goals, ranking second for a single-season at Brown and trailing on the 1984 team (three goals allowed). The team became just the third Brown club to allow single-digit goals, joining the 1984 and 2000 (nine goals allowed) teams. Brown's 10 shutouts on the year tied for second all-time at College Hill alongside the 2000 team, trailing only the 1984 club's 12 clean sheets.
Brown improved to 27-17-2 in the all-time series with Yale and moved to 4-1 in the last five meetings with the Bulldogs. The Bears finished the year with a 4-1-3 home record and posted a 7-1-4 mark in their last 12 matches of 2016.
Prior to the game, the Bears honored their four seniors – Jaclyn Alois (Andover, Mass.), Calas, Gould, and Warshauer – for their hard work and dedication to the program over the last four years.
For the match, Brown led in shots on goal (7-4) while the Bulldogs held advantages in shots (13-9) and corner kicks (5-2). Yale goalkeeper Alyssa Fagel (3-6-2) turned aside six shots in the loss.
