SERIES HISTORY
Brown holds a 26-17-2 edge in the 45 all-time meetings with Yale. The Bears have won three of the last four fixtures between the two sides. Brown and Yale have met in the final Ivy League game every year since 2008 with the Bulldogs gaining a slight 4-3-1 edge in those meetings. Last year, Brown won 2-1 behind goals from Carly Gould '17 (Hampton Falls, N.H.) and Erin Katz '16 (Montgomery, Ala.).
IN THE HISTORY BOOKS
Brown has entered into a conversation with the program's history books based off its defensive stoutness and ability to earn points in 13 of 15 matches to date.
The Bears have allowed just seven goals on the year, ranking second in a single-season at Brown and trailing only the 1984 team that permitted just three goals. The 1989 team stands as the only other team to give up single-digit goals (nine) over a full season. Brown's nine shutouts this year stand third all-time at Brown with the Bears only looking up at the 1984 (12 shutouts) and 2000 (10 shutouts) clubs.
With a win on Saturday, the Bears will have a chance to finish with their highest winning percentage – in both the overall and Ivy League categories – since the year 2000. With a win and a Columbia draw or loss, Brown can finish second in the Ivy League standings, which would mark its highest finish in the league table since its last Ivy title in 1994.
IN THE POLLS
In the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings, Brown checks in at No. 6 with four other Ivy teams – No. 4 Harvard, No. 7 Princeton, No. 9 Columbia, and No. 10 Penn – appearing in the poll. The Bears stand at No. 70 in the RPI with only No. 31 Princeton and No. 47 Harvard ranking ahead of them among Ancient Eight sides. Yale sits at No. 122 in the RPI.
IVY STANDINGS
The Bears come into the weekend as the No. 3 team in the Ivy League standings with 11 points. Brown trails No. 1 Harvard (14 points) and No. 2 Columbia (13 points) and stands ahead of No. 4 Penn (eight points) with one conference game remaining for all eight Ivy sides. Harvard and Columbia stand as the only teams mathematically eligible for the league title with the two sides squaring off for the Ivy title at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Brown has a chance to finish as high as second in the league standings depending on Saturday's results. Regardless of this weekend's outcomes, the Bears will finish in the top half of the league table in back-to-back years for the first time since 1993-94.
ETZEL RANKS AMONG NATION'S BEST
Sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) ranks third in the NCAA in save percentage (0.914), seventh in goals-against average (0.434) and 15th in shutouts (nine).
She has posted nine shutouts in 15 matches this season and has allowed just six goals in 1,405 minutes. Etzel leads the Ivy League in total saves (66), save percentage, goals-against average, and shutouts. She made a career-high 14 saves in Brown's 1-1 (2OT) draw with Harvard and stopped seven shots in the Bears' 2-1 win at Princeton. She blocked nine shots in Brown's 0-0 (2OT) draw at Buffalo, and turned aside a penalty kick in a 1-0 win at Lafayette.
Her nine shutouts this year rank in a tie for second place on Brown's single-season list, and her 13 career clean sheets rank fourth in the Bears' career record book. Last season, the Honorable Mention All-Ivy pick ranked second in the Ivy League in both total saves (75) and save percentage (0.833), finishing the year with four shutouts and a 0.99 goals-against average.
TEAM DEFENSE: AMONG NCAA LEADERS
As a team, Brown ranks third in the nation in save percentage (0.914), seventh in goals-against average (0.434), and 16th in shutout percentage (0.600). The Bears' defensive unit has aided sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) with juniors Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) and sophomore Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) headlining the back four. Senior Sydney Calas (Bethesda, Md.), sophomore Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.), junior Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.), and freshmen Abby Kaplan (Potomac, Md.) and Terri Wilken (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) have all contributed to the team's defensive organization.
GOULD PACES THE ATTACK
Senior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) leads Brown with 10 points, tying for the team high in goals (three) alongside a team-best four assists. The team captain paces Brown in shots (34) and shots on goal (16). She has scored a pair of game-winning goals for the Bears, providing the decisive tally in Brown's 3-0 win over Rhode Island and the team's 1-0 win at Lafayette. She compiled a goal and an assist in Brown's 3-2 win at Holy Cross. A two-time All-Ivy selection, Gould has played in 63 games with 59 starts and 14 goals in her career.
LANE POSTS BACK-TO-BACK TALLIES
Sophomore Amanda Lane (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) has tallied Brown's goals in both of its last two contests, scoring her first goal of the season in the 85th minute in a 1-0 win vs. Cornell and netting her second goal in as many games in a 1-1 draw at Penn. In Ivy play, Lane leads the club in both points (five) and goals (two). Against Cornell, her second career game-winning goal came as freshman Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) played in a corner kick from the right side. Lane's second goal of the season came off a header from a ball played into the 18-yard box from sophomore Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.).
STORY OF A GIRL
Sophomore forward Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) scored the game-winning goals in back-to-back games for Brown, netting the game winners in a 2-1 win at Princeton and a 3-2 win at Holy Cross. She scored the decisive goal against the Tigers in the 88th minute, mirroring her goal to give the Bears a 3-2 double overtime win at Cornell in 2015. For the season, she is tied for the team lead with three goals and ranks second on the club with seven points.
TAKING DOWN THE TIGERS
Sophomore Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) scored in the 10th minute, and classmate Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) netted the game winner in the 88th minute as Brown toppled defending Ivy League champion Princeton, 2-1, on Oct. 8. The Bears snapped a nine-game Ivy unbeaten streak for the host Tigers, coming up with their first win at Princeton since 2006.
LEHAN ANCHORS BACK, ENTERS OFFENSIVE EQUATION
Junior Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) anchors the Bears' defensive unit from her center back position. Having missed just one game for Brown over her career, she has played every minute in all 47 games in which she has appeared. Lehan entered into the offensive equation for the first time in her career vs. URI, scoring a goal and adding an assist in the team's 3-0 season-opening win. She tallied an assist in Brown's 1-0 victory over Dartmouth in its Ivy opener and tacked on another helper in a 3-2 win at Holy Cross.
WALDMAN ON THE WING
Junior Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) has proven herself dangerous on the attack for Brown, consistently playing in threatening balls from the right wing. She landed her first goal of the season in the Bears' 1-1 (2OT) draw with Harvard, finishing off a cross from sophomore Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.). She posted two assists in the Bears' 3-0 win over URI, tying a career high and pushing her career assist total to seven.
FIRST CAREER GOALS
Sophomore forward Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) scored her first career goal in the 10th minute of Brown's 2-1 win at Princeton, snapping a 302-minute home shutout streak for the Tigers. She notched her second career assist in a 3-2 win at Holy Cross. Junior defender Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) found the back of the net for the first time in her career in the win against the Crusaders.
Sophomore forward Kate Maher (Seattle, Wash.) netted her first career goal in the Bears' 1-0 win over Dartmouth in their Ivy League opener, capitalizing on a rebound after junior Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drove a header on target off a corner kick from junior Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.).
Freshman midfielder Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal as she netted the game winner in Brown's 1-0 win over Stony Brook in the 31st minute off a header via a corner kick from Cobb. Carchio logged the first two assists of her career in Brown's 3-2 win at Holy Cross and notched the assist on the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Cornell.
WARSHAUER RETURNS TO SCORING STAGE
Senior Ella Warshauer (Santa Monica, Calif.), making her first appearance since the 2014 season, scored the game-winning goal in Brown's 1-0 win at Central Connecticut State. The tally stood as Warshauer's second career goal as she also netted the game winner in Brown's 2-0 win over Quinnipiac on Oct. 7, 2014.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Yale brings a 6-6-3 overall record and a 2-3-1 Ivy League mark into the weekend, coming off a 2-1 overtime win over Columbia. Aerial Chavarin ranks third in the Ivy League in points (23) and tied for third in goals (nine) while Michelle Alozie supports her with 12 points on 4 goals and 4 assists. Alyssa Fagel has seen the majority of time in goal, making nine starts and recording a 1.27 GAA, one shutout, and a 3-5-2 record.
