Kingston, R.I. – Brown battled No. 21 Rhode Island down to the wire, before falling to the Rams, 79-72, at the Ryan Center in the second round of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.
Brown continues play in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday, November 19, traveling to Uncasville, Conn., to face Marist at the Mohegan Sun Arena, starting at 5:30 pm. Bears' senior forward Steven Spieth (Dallas, TX) scored over 20 points for the second straight game with a typical Spieth performance, scoring 21 points, grabbing five rebounds and handing out four assists.
Perhaps the best guard on the floor was Bears' freshman guard Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ), who scored a career high 16 points and used his speed to keep the Rams off-balance.
Sophomore forward Travis Fuller (Encianitis, CA) pace the Bears with seven rebounds, while adding 11 points, and senior guard Tavon Blackmon (Upper Marlboro, MD) chipped in with 11 points.
Jared Terrell turned in an 18-point performance for the Rams, while EC Matthews netted 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Hassan Martin tossed in 12 points, blocked six shots and had a game high eight rebounds for URI.
Rhode Island opened up a 15-point lead, 36-21, on a lay-up by Jared Terrell with 4:29 left in the opening half.
The Bears got back in the game with a flurry of activity at the end of the half. Down 39-27 with 1:02 left in the half, Brown outscored the Rams, 6-2, to end the half on treys by Spieth and senior JR Hobbie (Spring Lake, NJ) to trail, 41-33 at intermission.
A layup by Spieth with 15:25 left in the second half cut the URI advantage to 50-44 and the Bears were back in the game.
Anderson's layup with 11:40 remaining cut the Rhode Island lead to 58-53, followed by a Fuller layup that drew the Bears to within three points, 58-55, at the 10:29 mark.
Every time the Top 25 Rams looked for a knock-out punch, the Bears responded.
A trey by Terrell gave the Rams a 70-62 lead, but Anderson answered for the Bears with a three-point play to cut the URI lead to five points, 70-65, with 3:36 left in the game.
