PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore Jennifer Caruso scored in the 10th minute, and classmate Celia Story netted the game winner in the 88th minute as Brown University women's soccer toppled defending Ivy League champion Princeton University, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.
The Bears (6-2-3, 2-1-0 Ivy) snapped a nine-game Ivy unbeaten streak for the host Tigers (9-2-1, 1-1-1 Ivy), coming up with their first win at Princeton – a team receiving votes in the NSCAA national poll and ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings – since 2006.
Story (Bainbridge, Island, Wash.) provided the heroics for the Bears, knocking home a rebound at the 87:12 mark for her fifth career goal, second goal of the season, and second career game winner.
After senior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.), sophomore Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), and freshman Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) all kept the play alive in the box, sophomore Amanda Lane (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) sent a shot on goal with Story pouncing on the rebound and Lane earning an assist.
Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) gave the Bears an early lead just 9:40 into the match with her first career goal. After sophomore Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) sent a ball into the box, Caruso chipped the loose ball into the back of the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Brown sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made seven saves, tying her career high in an Ivy League match. For the season, Etzel (6-2-3) – who entered the contest ranked in the top three in the NCAA in shutouts, save percentage, and goals-against average – has allowed just three goals in 11 matches over 1,050 minutes for a 0.26 GAA.
Princeton netted an equalizer at 54:00 as Mimi Asom registered her fifth goal of the season to level the score line at 1-1. Jesse McDonough played in a corner kick from the right side where Abby Givens sent a pass to Asom who converted from the edge of the goal area.
Tigers goalie Natalie Grossi (9-2-1) stopped three shots in the loss.
For the match, Princeton held advantages in shots (14-8), shots on goal (8-5), and corner kicks (5-3).
Brown – ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings and No. 112 in the RPI – improved to 18-17-4 all-time against Princeton – ranked No. 28 in the RPI.
Next, Brown plays at Holy Cross on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. prior to hosting Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
