
Women's Water Polo Opens Season at Harvard Mini Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University women's water polo gained a 16-5 exhibition win over Boston University before falling to Iona, 9-7, and Villanova, 8-6, on Opening Day on Saturday at Blodgett Pool in the Harvard Mini Invitational.
The Bears (0-2) received a strong effort from their freshman class and nearly defeated the Gaels (1-0) and Wildcats (1-1) in a pair of two-goal contests.
Next, Brown hosts the Bruno Classic from Friday, Feb. 5 to Sunday, Feb. 7 with the Bears opening play on Friday at 8:30 p.m. vs. Hawaii. On Saturday, Brown faces Hartwick (11:20 a.m.), St. Francis Brooklyn (2:50 p.m.), and Indiana (6:20 p.m.) before concluding action on Sunday vs. Wagner (4:10 p.m.).
Game 1 – Brown 16, Boston University 5 (Exhibition)
Brown's Class of 2019 paced the team to a 16-5 win in its exhibition opener over Boston University with the rookie class accounting for 12 goals in the Bears' first game of the day.
Freshman Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Bears with four goals while classmate McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) scored three times. First-year Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) posted three goals, and rookie Audrey Flower (Portola Valley, Calif.) scored twice.
Seniors Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) and Victoria Pierotti (Newport Beach, Calif.), junior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.), and sophomore Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) added one goal each.
Sophomore transfer goalkeeper Emily Adams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) made five saves in net.
Brown took a 6-1 lead after the first quarter behind two goals from Rosas and one apiece from Santiago, Kolokotronis, Miller, and McDougal. BU rallied with a 3-2 edge in the second quarter despite goals from Pierotti and McDougal as the Bears brought an 8-4 edge into halftime.
In the third stanza, Miller and McDougal each netted two goals while Heilman and Flower each found the back of the net to one goal for the Terriers as Brown pulled ahead 14-5 through three periods. Flower and Rosas tacked on markers in the fourth frame.

Game 2 – Iona 9, Brown 7
The Bears led or remained within two goals for much of the game, but Brown fell to Iona, 9-7, in its second game of the day at Harvard.
Kolokotronis and McDougal paced the Brown offense with two goals each while Heilman, Miller, and Santiago chipped in one goal apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) helped keep the Bears within striking distance, turning aside 10 shots.
Brown missed all three of their penalty shot attempts in the contest.
The Bears opened the contest with a 2-0 lead behind goals from Miller and Kolokotronis. After a trio of tallies from the Gaels, Santiago found the back of the net to tie the score at 3-3 after the first quarter.
Iona charted the second stanza's first two goals before a response from Kolokotronis. The Gaels went up 6-4 prior to another marker from Kolokotronis, and Dakan made a point-blank save to allow Brown to remain within 6-5 at halftime.
The Gaels took the third quarter with a 2-1 edge despite a goal from Heilman, bringing an 8-6 lead into the final frame. Iona went ahead 9-6 at the midway point of the fourth with McDougal responding with a goal with 2:35 to play, but the Gaels held on for the win.

Game 3 – Villanova 8, Brown 6
Six different Bears scored to give Brown a 6-4 lead midway through the third quarter, but Villanova netted the game's last four goals to pull out an 8-6 decision in the teams' final game at the Harvard Mini.
Brown took a 2-0 lead after the first quarter and led 5-3 at halftime. The Bears maintained a 6-5 edge through three quarters before the Wildcats used a 3-0 fourth quarter to take the win.
Heilman, Kolokotronis, Miller, Santiago, senior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.), and freshman Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) each struck for one goal for the Bears.
On the power play, the Bears went 1-for-11 in the match and finished 1-for-2 on penalty shots. Brown went 0-for-6 on 6-on-5 opportunities in the second half.
Brown opened with its 2-0 lead after the first frame as Miller connected on a penalty shot, and Santiago scored on the inside.
The Bears pushed their edge to 3-0 early in the second quarter on Warner's goal. After a Wildcat tally, Heilman answered with a lob-shot goal. Villanova then pulled within 4-3 before Dodd scored to give Brown a 5-3 halftime advantage.
Villanova pulled within 5-4 before Kolokotronis pushed the Bears' lead back to two goals at 6-4 with the team's final marker of the contest with 4:48 to go in the third. The Wildcats scored once in the remainder of the third and netted three goals in the final stanza to complete the rally.
