Men's Tennis Falls to Buffalo, 4-3, then Rebounds with 6-1 Win Over BU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's tennis team opened up Sunday's competition with a 4-3 loss to Buffalo before cruising to a 6-1 win over Boston University at the Pizzitola Sports Center. In the defeat, the Bears played a tough Bulls team with just the doubles point being the deciding factor for the match point.

For singles play versus Buffalo, junior Gregory Garcia (Poway, Calif.) took first singles with a score of 6-4, 6-3 while sophomore Peter Tarwid (Lake Forest, Ill.) won third singles, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Charles Tan (Austin, Texas) also picked up a singles win, with a 6-2, 6-0 decision in sixth singles.

Buffalo won two doubles matches to capture the overall win. Garcia and Tarwid were the lone doubles victors for Brown, with a score of 6-2 in first doubles.

The Bears came back strong in their second match of the day as Tarwid (6-4, 6-1), freshman Mladen Mitak (Zagreb, Croatia) (6-4, 6-2), sophomore Jack Haworth (Corby, England) (6-3, 7-6). Sophomore Aaron Sandberg (Hudson, Ohio) (6-1, 7-5) and Anthony Arocho (Norridge, Ill.)(6-1, 6-4) recorded singles victories. All three Brown doubles squads earned wins in their matches, in Haworth and Mitak (6-2), Tarwid and Tan (6-0) and Garcia and freshman Austin Hearst (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (6-3).

The Bears will next compete on Saturday, Feb. 6 when they host Binghamton and Quinnipiac at the Pizzitola Sports Center at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
