
Women's Swimming & Diving Upends Columbia 157-143

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team defeated Columbia, 157-143, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. The victory over the Lions marks the Bears' first win over Columbia in 10 years.
"Today's win was a full team effort and a wonderful way to honor our seniors in their final home meet," said head coach Kate Kovenock.
A relay team of sophomore Jenna Zagoren (Cherry Hill, N.J.), sophomore Ally Donahue (Tampa, Fla.), junior Caroline Vexler (Moreland Hills, Ohio) and senior Reia Tong (Bethesda, Md.) started the meet off with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.48. Zagoren, Donahue and Tong went on to post individual first-place finishes that included: Zagoren in the 100-yard backstroke (59.09), Donahue in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.57) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.89) and Tong in the 50-yard freestyle (23.33) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.85). Vexler also had strong performances individually, placing second in the 100-yard butterfly (56.37) and third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.48).
Behind Tong in the 50-yard freestyle was sophomore Aja Grande (Honolulu, Hawaii) and freshman Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.) who placed second (23.72) and third (23.99), respectively. Salesky and Grande switched spots in the 100-yard freestyle behind Tong with Salesky turning in a second-place finish (51.86) and Grande coming in at third (51.92).
Sophomores Sarah Cronin (Westfield, N.J.) and Korbyn Simpson (Baltimore, Md.) touched the wall in second (1:50.97) and third (1:53.27) in the 200-yard freestyle for seven points. Another second and third place finish was recorded by senior Gina Matsumoto (Farmington Hills, Mich.) (2:04.56) and Vexler (2:05.48) in the 200-yard butterfly.
Senior Rachel Speakman (Hudson, Ohio) earned the top-spot in 3m dive with a score of 256.81 with sophomore Megan Pope (Los Altos, Calif.) grabbing second (249.15). Speakman finished second in 1m diving with a score of 265.13. Junior Molly Gelb (Ann Arbor, Mich.) also earned points in the 1m (239.78) and 3m (242.70).
Freshman Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.) finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.09).
Donahue and junior Katie Roach (Colorado Springs, Colo.) grabbed the top two spots in the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:19.89 and 2:21.24. Donahue later finished second in the 200-yard IM (2:05.80).
Simpson grabbed another second-place finish, this one in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.49). Freshman Kendall Crawford (Greenwood Village, Colo.) placed fourth in the race (5:09.21).
To close out the meet, a team of Salesky, Simpson, Cronin and Tong finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 3:26.18.
The Bears will next compete at Cornell on Saturday, Jan. 30 with the meet starting at 9:00 a.m.
