HAMDEN, Conn. – Rookie Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) and senior Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) registered back-to-back second-half goals to power the Brown men's soccer team past Quinnipiac, 2-0, in Friday afternoon's season opener at the QU Soccer Field.

Brown opens up the season at 1-0, while Quinnipiac, last year's MAAC regular season champion, slipped to 0-2-1.

The Bears broke up a scoreless tie in the 78th minute when Chow and Akeel notched consecutive goals within a 27-second span. Junior keeper Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) turned away all three shots he faced to capture the win, while Triston Henry took the loss for the Bobcats. Hanson picked up his second career shutout in as many games following a 1-0 victory against UNH in his debut last season.

Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard during the opening 45 minutes, as the Bears outshot the home side by a 6-3 margin, but the visitors took control in the second half with a 12-4 advantage in shots.

Brown opened up the scoring at 77:55 when Akeel found space down the right side and sent a pass to Chow in front of the net. The freshman then rifled a shot to the top corner, which tipped off the glove of Henry and into the back of the goal for his first career tally.

The Bears went right back to work when Akeel scored 27 seconds later, as the senior knocked home a cross from freshman Carl Johan Mix (Stockholm, Sweden), giving the visitors a two-goal lead.

Quinnipiac had three straight corner kicks in the 85th minute but the Bears held the Bobcats to without a shot during the stretch for the eventual shutout. Brown outshot QU, 18-7, while the Bobcats won the battle for corners, 7-1.

Brown returns to play on Friday, Sept. 11 when it visits crosstown rival and 2014 College Cup semifinalist Providence College at 7 p.m.
