BRONX, N.Y. – Junior Warren Smith scored three goals as Brown University men's water polo topped Fordham University, 13-8, with a six-goal fourth quarter on Sunday afternoon at the Messmore Aquatic Center.
The Bears (10-3, 4-0 CWPA North) beat the Rams (6-6, 2-2 CWPA North) to complete their New York swing 2-0, including an 11-7 win at Iona on Saturday night. Brown was scheduled to play at St. Francis Brooklyn earlier in the day, but an issue with officials forced the sides to postpone the contest and look for a potential makeup date.
"It's always great to pick up two wins in two tough environments over the course of the weekend," head coach Felix Mercado said. "Hopefully we will be able to reschedule our game with St. Francis, and we are looking forward to getting back in our home pool next time out."
Smith (Dallas, Texas) paced the Bears' offense while juniors Luke Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Yahel Murvitz-Lahav (Tel Aviv, Israel) and freshman Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.) each netted two goals.
Junior Jake Wyatt (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) sophomores Rico Burke (San Mateo, Calif.) and Austin Hwang (Laguna Hills, Calif.), and freshman Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) posted one goal apiece.
In net, junior goalie Luke Weiser (Los Alamitos, Calif.) made nine saves.
The two sides battled to a 1-1 first quarter as Irwin scored the game's opening goal midway through the first frame.
Fordham notched the second stanza's first two goals before Smith netted his first of the contest to pull Brown within 3-2. After another Ram marker, Hwang and Nunez closed the period's scoring to tie the score at 4-4 at the half.
The Bears pulled ahead at 7-6 through three periods as Smith, Murvitz-Lahav, and Irwin provided goals.
In the fourth, Brown captured a 13-7 lead after charting six of the quarter's first seven goals. Wyatt started the run before Burke and Carroll scored. Murvitz-Lahav, Smith, and Nunez closed the scoring for the visitors.
Next, Brown enjoys a bye weekend prior to hosting Connecticut College (Oct. 9, 7:30 p.m.), MIT (Oct. 10, noon), and No. 18 Harvard (Oct. 11, 6 p.m.) in a trio of CWPA Northern Division match-ups.
