PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Nate Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) and senior Tim Whalen (Amston, Conn.) both scored second-half goals to lead the Brown men's soccer team to a comeback victory over Massachusetts, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field.
Brown snapped a three-game skid to improve to 4-3 on the season, while UMass dropped to 1-9 overall.
Junior Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) stopped a pair of shots to pick up the win and move to 3-2. Jorge Becerra recorded three saves for the Minutemen in the loss.
Massachusetts opened the scoring at 19:23 to establish the early one-goal advantage. Mark Dunphy crossed midfield and sent a pass to the left side for Matthew Mooney, who avoided a pair of defenders and blasted a shot from 18 yards out past Hanson for the goal.
Brown outshot the Minutemen by a 5-3 margin in the opening 45 minutes.
Brown roared back with a pair of goals in the second half, starting with Pomeroy in the 66th minute. After a pair of quick passes by Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.), the junior lofted a shot from the top of the box and over the head of Becerra for his first tally of the season.
Whalen then broke the tie game at 79:58 for his first goal of the season. After a corner kick by Gorab bounced off a Minuteman player, Whalen was waiting right in front of the net and headed home the go-ahead goal, giving the home side the eventual victory.
Brown held a 10-7 advantage in shots, while UMass had the lead in corner kicks, 9-5.
The Bears kicks off the Ivy League schedule on Saturday, October 3 when they travel to Columbia at 7 p.m.
