PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Will Sheeran (Bellevue, Wash.) placed third overall on the men's side and senior Charlotte Walmsley (Weston, Mass.) finished 20th for the women as the Brown cross country teams opened the 2015 season at the Nassaney Invitational on Saturday morning at Bryant University.
Nassaney Invitational
The men's side was runner-up out of 11 teams, trailing only Providence College with 63 points, while the women's team finished 6th with 165 points.
"It was a solid opener for us. We left a few athletes at home, but overall I was happy to get second," said Tim Springfield, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country on the men's finish. "We had a couple athletes fade over the last mile which hurt us, but I want them to be aggressive early in the year."
Sheeran took third as he crossed the five-kilometer course at 14:51, while Matt Mahoney (Swampscott, Mass.) also posted a top-five finish as he placed fifth in a time of 14:55. Sophomore Ryan Anderson (Santa Rosa, Calif.) turned in a 12th-place finish at 15:18. Ben Sutherland (High Wycombe, England) and Ned Willig (Phoenixville, Pa.) placed 21st and 22nd, respectively, at 15:29 and 15:35.
"Charlotte ran a strong race to lead the team. It was good to see her healthy and running well.
After Walmsley crossed at 18:41, Eliza Lukens-Day (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Ariel Sullivan placed 28th and 32nd, respectively, in times of 19:03 and 19:17. Hannah Szapary finished 41st at 19:31, before Cecile Harmange (Andover, Mass.) crossed at 19:40 to round out the Brown scorers.
