PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown men's crew picked up a pair of victories at Princeton on calm water and sunny skies, but lost a close race in the varsity eight, as the Tigers claimed the Content Cup Saturday on Lake Carnegie's fully-marked championship racecourse.
The first race of the day was the fifth varsity, as the Bears came out swinging and dealt some very powerful blows against the Princeton 5V. With half the race gone, the Brown 5V had open water on the Tigers, and they held their margin to the finish line. The Brown 5V won in a time of 6:17 followed by Princeton at 6:20. In the 4V, the same grit showed in the racing as they dealt some swift blows early in the race to find themselves in full control with two minutes down. At the halfway mark, the Princeton 4V came up and tried to challenge, but the Brown 4V coxswain called a strong push and the crew responded and gained all the ground back to set up a final push. At the line, the Brown crew crossed in a time of 6:04.0, with Princeton trailing at 6:07.1.
With two wins in the books, the Brown team was excited to carry the momentum to the next three races, starting with the third varsity. After the start, the Brown 3V settled a bit lower than the Princeton 3V. This allowed the quicker, more agile Princeton boat to make gains through the first half, and by the time the Brown boat picked it up, they were a length behind and could not get back on terms with the Princeton boat. The final times were Princeton 5:54, Brown 5:59.
The JV boat was the next event, and Brown would be racing against an undefeated Princeton boat. The two boats left the start in a hurry, and the Princeton boat quickly picked up seats in the first quarter of the race. At the 1,000-meter mark, the Brown crew started to mount a charge, and you could see there was a different spirit to their rowing, and they held their position for the rest of the race, even moving back into the Princeton crew at times. The final results were Princeton 5:46.8 and Brown at 5:51.0.
The final race of the day was for the Content Cup, and at this time of the year, both crews were exhibiting championship speed. The two crews left the starting line at breakneck speed, covering the first 500 meters in blistering time. Watching the starts, it appeared that the Brown crew had a cleaner and livelier set of starting strokes, which sent them into the body of the race with more speed and rhythm than the Princeton boat. At the quarter mark, Brown had a lead of three seats that was growing rapidly. The Brown crew crossed the mid-race mark with a lead, rowing full strokes. As the two crews crossed the final quarter mark, the Princeton crew had a powerful push and just got their bow across at the finish line. The final times were Princeton, 5:37.9, and Brown at 5:38.6.
The Bears return to action on Sunday, May 17 at the Eastern Sprints.
