SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Freshman Katie Orona held the Quakers to one run in game one while Sarah Syrop and Grayson Metzger each hit home runs in game two to lead Brown University softball to a sweep of Penn, 6-1 and 6-5 respectively, on Friday afternoon at Conaty Park.

The Bears (8-10, 3-3 Ivy) picked up their first sweep of the Quakers (12-12, 3-3 Ivy) since 2011 in a pair of games played at Bryant University's softball complex due to field conditions at Brown.

Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) threw a complete game in the first contest, striking out six batters and permitting just one run on seven hits in seven innings. In game two, Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a home run, and a double while Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.

Next, Brown hosts Columbia for a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow at Bryant's Conaty Park.

Game 1 – Brown 6, Penn 1

Orona improved her record to 5-3 on the season, sophomore Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) went 3-for-4, and junior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) and freshman Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) each notched two RBIs as Brown beat Penn, 6-1, in the opening contest.

Park went 2-for-4 including a one-run double while Leung sent a key two-run double to right field in the last of the sixth.

After neither team scored a run through the first three innings, Penn took a 1-0 lead as Jurie Joyner singled up the middle in the top of the fourth.

Brown responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, taking the lead for good. After Hanna led off the frame with a bunt single, Park drove her in with a double to left field. Freshman Emily Springfield (Oceanside, Calif.) gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with an RBI single through the left side.

Park pushed Brown's edge to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth as she singled through the right side.

The Bears took control of the game with a two-out rally in the last of the sixth. After Metzger singled with two outs, Leung hit her two-run double, and Hanna drove home another run with a single.

Alexis Borden (6-7) took the loss for the Quakers, tossing six innings and allowing six runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts.

Game 2 – Brown 6, Penn 5

Senior pitcher Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) gave up just two earned runs, and Syrop and Metzger's combined five RBIs propelled Brown to a 6-5 win over Penn in game two to complete the sweep.

Cherness (3-3) threw a complete-game seven innings allowing five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in the win.

Syrop, a sophomore, and Metzger, a freshman, led the Bears at the plate with three combined extra-base hits while Hanna went 2-for-4 to compile a 5-for-8 effort at the plate between the two games.

Alexis Sargent staked the Quakers to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the second as she blasted a two-run homer to left field.

The Bears responded with a home run of their own in the bottom of the inning as Syrop sent a shot to right field to lead off the inning.

Brown took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the top of the third as Leung and Hanna set the table with a hit by pitch and bunt single respectively. Park then hit a sacrifice fly to center, and two batters later Syrop doubled to left center to score two more.

Metzger placed a two-run home run over the fence in left center to give the Bears a 6-2 lead in the top of the eighth. The club needed the runs as Joyner hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh before Cherness got out of the inning.

Sargent (2-1) absorbed the loss, pitching 2.2 innings and conceding four runs in the start.
