PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Olivia Santiago scored two goals, and freshman goalie Marisol Dakan made 10 saves, but sixth-seeded Brown University women's water polo fell to third-seeded Indiana University, 11-4, in the quarterfinals of the 2015 CWPA Championship.
At Princeton University's DeNunzio Pool on Friday afternoon, the Bears (18-17) remained within 4-2 of the 11th-ranked Hoosiers (22-11) at the half and stayed within 5-3 midway through the third quarter before Indiana gained separation.
Brown will continue play at the tournament in the consolation bracket semifinals on Saturday at 6:40 p.m. while Indiana advances to the championship semifinals tomorrow at 3:50 p.m.
An All-CWPA Second Team selection, Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) increased her single-season saves total to 379 saves, a Brown record. On April 7, Dakan eclipsed the previous single-season record of 296 saves set by Evan Cranston in 2012.
Senior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) and sophomore Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) each netted one goal for the Bears.
Brown struck first in the game thanks to an Indiana ejection at the 4:16 mark of the first quarter as Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) buried the ensuing advantage chance with 3:58 on the clock to put the Bears in front for the only time in the contest.
The Hoosiers answered Santiago's score with a pair of power play goals as Shelby Taylor and Kelly Matthews converted on back-to-back six-on-five opportunities at 3:37 and 1:51, respectively, to put Indiana in front at 2-1.
Brown balanced the scoreboard with 6:05 left in the second quarter as Santiago beat Mary Campbell with another power play shot, but once again the Hoosiers matched the Bears advantage play. Alexis Jones twirled in her own 6-on-5 goal at 2:48 to put Indiana in front to stay at 3-2 before depositing the game's first even-strength goal with 1:35 left in the second quarter for a 4-2 Hoosiers' lead at intermission.
The game turned in the third quarter as Jones converted another man-up goal with 7:13 on the clock to complete a hat trick and hand the Hoosiers a 5-2 lead.
Brown trimmed the margin back to 5-3 at 5:14 via a volley from Kolokotronis, but Indiana closed the frame with a trio scores from Candyce Schroeder, Jones, and Jennifer Beadle at 3:29 (6-on-5), 0:42, and 0:11, respectively, to open up the contest at 8-3.
Summer Creighton netted a goal 33 seconds into the fourth quarter as she drove a shot into the goal with 7:27 left in the fourth quarter to expand Indiana's lead to 9-3.
Rosen restarted the Bears' offense at 3:39, notching the eighth 6-on-5 tally of the contest to move Brown to within 9-4, but even-strength (3:17) and man-up (2:38) goals from Colleen McNaught and Taylor, respectively, closed out the victory for Indiana.
Indiana's Jones led all scorers with four goals while Campbell tallied 12 saves.
The Bears converted 3-of-5 power play opportunities while the Hoosiers went 6-for-9 on the advantage. Each team won two sprints with Brown gaining the first possession in the first and third quarters.
Brown contested Indiana more closely than in the first meeting between the two teams this season when the Hoosiers won 16-4 – and led 10-2 at the half – on April 11 at Princeton.
