PRINCETON, N.J. – Seven different Bears scored goals, and Brown's defense blanked GW in the first half as Brown University women's water polo topped George Washington, 10-3, in the consolation semifinals of the CWPA Championship on Saturday night at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
The sixth-seeded Bears (19-17) beat the ninth-seeded Colonials (14-16) for the second time in as many weeks after Brown beat GW 10-9 in overtime at home on April 18.
Brown advances to the fifth-place game on Sunday at noon, playing against the winner of the game between No. 4 seed Harvard and No. 7 seed Bucknell. GW will face the loser of that contest in the seventh-place game at 10:30 a.m.
Senior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) led a balanced Brown effort with two goals, three assists, three steals, and two sprints won. Freshman Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted two goals and three assists while sophomore Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) tallied two goals.
Junior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) contributed a goal, two assists, and four ejections drawn, and junior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.) added three assists and a goal. Sophomore Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) charted a goal and two steals, and junior Victoria Pierotti (Newport Beach, Calif.) chipped in a goal.
In net, freshman goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) backstopped the Bears, making 11 saves and helping the team hold the Colonials to 0-for-7 on the power play.
The Bears scored all six of the first half's goals, registering three goals in each of the first two quarters. Kolokotronis opened the game's scoring just over three minutes into the game before Crowley netted a goal 30 seconds later. Rosen closed the first period's scoring at the 1:45 mark.
Crowley continued Brown's scoring in the second stanza with a goal at 6:24 before Dodd logged a marker midway through the quarter. Rosen gave the Bears a 6-0 lead heading to halftime with a tally with 59 seconds left before the break.
The Colonials netted the third quarter's first goal, but Santiago answered with a goal 22 seconds later. GW pulled within 7-2 midway through the frame, but the Bears scored twice more before the period finished with Pierotti and Heilman accounting for the markers.
Heilman pushed Brown's lead to 10-2 with 5:35 to play in the fourth period. GW scored the game's final goal with 5:14 remaining.
