HANOVER, N.H. – Brown University softball dropped a doubleheader to Ivy League North Division-leading Dartmouth College, 4-0 and 6-0, to close a four-game series at the Dartmouth Softball Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears (11-19, 5-11 Ivy) went 1-3 in the series against the Big Green (21-14, 14-2 Ivy) after the two teams split a twin bill on Saturday in which Brown won game two, 9-0, after Dartmouth took game one, 6-1.
In the circle, senior Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.), freshman Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.), and sophomore Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) combined to limit the hosts to five earned runs over 12 innings.
Senior Trista Chavez (San Pedro, Calif.) went 3-for-6 over the two games to pace the Bears at the plate.
Next, Brown closes the regular season with a pair of twin bills against Yale – on the road on Friday beginning at 2:00 p.m. and at home on Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m.
Game 1 – Dartmouth 4, Brown 0
Chavez led the Bears with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, but Dartmouth gained a 4-0 win in game one.
Cherness allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts over six innings in the loss (3-6).
Dartmouth's Kristen Rumley (13-10) pitched a complete game shutout, fanning 10 batters and giving up four hits.
Junior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) and freshman Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) registered a double and a single respectively for the Bears.
The Big Green posted the game's first run in the bottom of the first as Maddie Damore doubled to center field to drive in a run.
The Bears threatened in the top of the third as Leung hit a one-out double to center field. Sophomore Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) advanced Leung to third with a sacrifice bunt before Rumley got out of the inning.
Dartmouth plated a pair in the last of the third on a sacrifice fly from Karen Chaw and an RBI double from Rumley. The hosts added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Katie McEachern singled to left field.
Game 2 – Dartmouth 6, Brown 0
Orona and Nakashima allowed just two earned runs over six innings, but Brown dropped a 6-0 decision to Dartmouth in game two.
Chavez, Leung, sophomore Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.), and freshman Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) each posted a hit for the visitors.
Orona (7-8) tossed five innings giving up six runs, two earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Nakashima came on for one inning of hitless relief.
For the Big Green, Morgan McCalmon (8-2) captured the win, hurling a complete game and permitting four hits with six strikeouts.
Dartmouth scored all of the game's runs in the bottom of the fifth but tallied just two earned runs in the frame. McCalmon brought home the first run with a bunt with runners on second and third. Chloe Madill pushed Dartmouth's edge to 2-0 with a single up the middle.
After an error allowed the Big Green to load the bases with two outs, McEachern hit a grand slam to left field to clear the bases.
The Bears attempted to rally in the top of the seventh as McGregor hit a single up the middle with one out. Syrop followed with a double to right center to put runners on second and third. Freshman Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) then hit a sharp groundout to third, and Nakashima drove a line drive right to the second baseman.
