
Women's Water Polo Tops GW in OT, Falls to No. 13 Princeton

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Olivia Santiago scored three goals, and sophomore Shannon Crowley netted the game-winning goal in overtime as Brown women's water polo beat George Washington, 10-9, prior to falling to No. 13 Princeton, 9-3, at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday.
On the last day of the CWPA regular season for all three teams, the Bears (18-16, 4-5 CWPA) came back to defeat the Colonials (12-14, 1-8 CWPA) in their morning contest prior to suffering a setback to the Tigers (26-3, 8-1 CWPA) in the evening.
In the win over GW, Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) made a pivotal play to tie the game at 8-8 before senior Emily Klein (Pleasanton, Calif.) knotted the score at 9-9 with 38 seconds left in regulation. Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) posted the game winner with nine seconds left in the first half of overtime.
Freshman goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) totaled 23 saves between the two contests.
Next, Brown will compete at the CWPA Championship at Princeton beginning on Friday.
Game 1 – Brown 10, George Washington 9 (OT)
Santiago scored three goals, and Crowley netted two, including the game winner, as Brown beat George Washington in overtime, 10-9, in its first game of the day.
Sophomore Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) and senior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) each recorded two goals, and Klein tallied the game-tying goal in regulation.
Crowley made a team-high five steals, Rosen dished out a team-best four assists, Kolokotronis tallied three steals and two assists, and Santiago drew four ejections.
Dakan registered 14 saves in the contest.
The two teams combined for seven goals in the fourth quarter with Brown outscoring GW, 4-3, to send the game into overtime tied at 9-9. Santiago started the period's scoring, driving a shot through the Colonial block to tie the score at 6-6. After a GW goal, Crowley recorded a goal from the point at five meters to again even the score.
GW gained an 8-7 lead before Santiago tied the game at 8-8 with 1:37 left in regulation. After an initial save, Santiago followed her own attempt, stealing the ball from the goalie, and firing a shot into the net. The Colonials scored inside of a minute, but Brown tied the score for the fourth time in the quarter as Klein scored off an assist from Rosen on the left side with 38 seconds left.
Crowley netted the game-winning goal with nine seconds left in the first half of overtime, placing a shot into the left side of the goal from five meters. Dakan made a key save with 1:50 left in the second part of OT, and Crowley and Kolokotronis each came up with steals on GW's last two possessions.
The Colonials took a 2-0 lead after the first quarter, scoring both of their goals early in the period. The Bears nearly answered later in the frame with one shot hitting the post and another bouncing off the crossbar.
Brown opened the second quarter with a goal as Rosen passed the ball up the pool to Kolokotronis who placed the ball into the left side of the net 47 seconds into the period. After a GW tally, Santiago scored on a turnaround shot from two meters off a pass inside from Kolokotronis to bring the Bears within 3-2 with 4:02 to play in the half.
Rosen tied the game at 3-3 with 2:12 left in the second, sending a shot into the right side of the goal from the right wing. The Colonials scored twice inside of the last 1:38 to bring a 5-3 lead into halftime.
The Bears posted the third quarter's first two goals to tie the game at 5-5. Kolokotronis notched the first goal, shooting inside the left post off a pass from junior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.), and Rosen knotted the score with a goal from the left side with 2:03 to play in the period. George Washington netted a goal with 12 seconds left in the quarter to take a 6-5 edge heading into the fourth.

Game 2 – No. 13 Princeton 9, Brown 3
Crowley, Kolokotronis, and Klein each scored once as Brown fell to No. 13 nationally-ranked Princeton, 9-3, in the team's second game of the day.
Crowley logged a team-high three steals while freshman Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) snagged two steals. In net, Dakan turned aside nine shots. Kolokotronis and Rosen each posted two field blocks.
After the Tigers opened the game with a goal 1:25 into the contest, the Bears answered just over a minute later as junior Victoria Pierotti (Newport Beach, Calif.) passed to Kolkotronis who scored on a turnaround shot from two meters. Dakan made a point blank save with just less three minutes to play in the period to keep it tied at 1-1.
Brown notched the second quarter's first goal as Klein placed a shot into the left side of the goal from the right wing from five meters midway through the frame. The Tigers posted the period's next three goals to take a 4-2 edge though Klein almost scored from a similar spot during the run. Late in the quarter a shot from Santiago glanced off the crossbar.
Princeton registered the third stanza's first goal before Crowley countered with a goal from the point at five meters, pulling the Bears within 5-3 at the 5:53 mark. The Tigers netted the period's three next goals despite another point blank save from Dakan and a five-meter penalty shot for Brown that Santiago drew.
In the fourth quarter, Kolokotronis hit the left post midway through the frame prior to an insurance goal from Princeton with 1:29 to play. Klein almost broke the plain of the goal with a shot before the buzzer, but Princeton's net-minder parried the ball away.
The Bears fell to the Tigers for the second time this season after Brown lost to Princeton, 9-4, in the Ivy Championship title game on Feb. 22.
