
Women's Water Polo Beats Iona to Finish Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Marisa Kolokotronis scored four goals as Brown University women's water polo beat Iona College, 7-6, after falling to Marist College, 12-9, on the second and final day of the Harvard Invitational at Blodgett Pool on Sunday.
The Bears (7-5) topped the Gaels (8-8) for the second time this season after defeating Iona, 10-9, on Feb. 7. The Red Foxes (6-9) bested Brown for the second time this year after earning a 14-6 decision on Feb. 1.
Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) netted the game-winning goal in the Bears' win over Iona while senior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) and sophomore Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) each scored three goals against Marist.
Freshman goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) held Iona to one goal in the first half and totaled a season-high 18 saves, and junior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.) made a field block with just over a minute remaining to help Brown remain in the lead.
Next, Brown will play a tripleheader in Oneonta, N.Y., on March 14 with games against Mercyhurst (9:45 a.m.), Villanova (1:00 p.m.), and host Hartwick (6:45 p.m.).
Game 1 – Marist 12, Brown 9
Rosen and Crowley each scored three goals, but Brown fell to Marist, 12-9, in its first game of the day and third overall at the Harvard Invitational.
Dodd, Kolokotronis, and junior Victoria Pierotti (Newport Beach, Calif.) each scored one goal for the Bears. On the other end of the pool, Dakan made 11 saves.
Crowley dished out a team-high three assists to go with three steals while Dodd added three steals of her own. Rosen tallied three assists and a steal, and junior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) drew a team-best three ejections.
The Red Foxes opened the game with a 4-0 lead before Brown netted the first quarter's last two goals. Rosen registered Brown's first goal at the 1:49 mark of the first stanza and posted the team's next goal with 36 seconds to play in the quarter.
Marist notched the second period's first two goals prior to a marker from Dodd just over three minutes into the quarter. Crowley kept Brown within 7-4 with a tally and recorded the first half's final goal to pull the Bears within 9-5 at the break.
Rosen netted the third quarter's initial goal to cut Brown's deficit to 9-6 prior to two goals from the Red Foxes, putting them ahead 11-6. Koloktronis scored with 51 seconds left in the third to trim Marist's edge to 11-7.
After falling behind 12-7 in the fourth quarter, Brown rallied behind goals from Crowley and Pierotti but could not complete the comeback.

Game 2 – Brown 7, Iona 6
Kolokotronis scored four goals, including the game winner, and grabbed three steals to power Brown past Iona, 7-6, in the team's final game of the Harvard Invitational.
Rosen compiled a goal, three assists, and three steals, Santiago posted a goal and four ejections drawn, and Pierotti tallied a goal and four steals. Crowley, Dodd, and freshman Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) each tacked on two steals.
In goal, Dakan turned aside a personal-best 18 shots.
With the Bears leading 5-4, Santiago netted a goal, whipping a turnaround shot into the net, to give Brown a 6-4 edge with just over three minutes to play. Iona pulled within 6-5, but Dodd made a pivotal field block with under two minutes remaining to maintain the Bears' one-goal lead.
Kolokotronis scored from the left side with just over a minute to play to give Brown a 7-5 advantage, and Dakan followed with a save on the next possession to help the Bears hold on for the win despite a late goal from the Gaels.
Dakan and the Bears' defense allowed just one goal in the first half as the Bears built a 4-1 lead over the first two quarters.
Crowley logged the game's first goal, beating the keeper to the right side past the midway mark of the first quarter. Kolokotronis netted her first goal of the contest on a quick lob shot before Pierotti scored after working past her defender to give Brown a 3-0 lead after the first stanza.
Iona netted the second frame's first goal before Kolokotronis drove home a shot from the 5-meter mark with less than five minutes to play in the quarter.
Kolokotronis extended Brown's lead to 5-1, scoring from the left side off a long pass early in the third quarter, before Iona used a 3-0 spurt to pull within 5-4 just over three minutes into the fourth period.
Goals from Santiago and Kolokotonis and the Bears' timely defensive plays provided the difference in the game's waning moments.
