
Women's Water Polo Beats Mercyhurst, Falls to Villanova, Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Brown University women's water polo defeated Mercyhurst University, 10-8, prior to falling to Villanova University in overtime, 11-10, and Hartwick College, 13-11, in a tripleheader at Hartwick's Herbert Aquatics Center on Saturday.
The Bears (8-7) topped the Lakers (5-6) for the second time this season in the team's first game of the day before dropping decisions to the Wildcats (12-9) and host Hawks (11-15) in the afternoon and night respectively.
Sophomore Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) led the Bears with nine goals between the three games, including six goals against Villanova. Classmate Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) totaled seven goals, including four vs. Mercyhurst, and senior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) compiled six goals on the day.
Freshman goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) compiled 33 saves between the three games, including 15 saves against Villanova.
Next, Brown begins play at the Loyola Marymount Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif., on Friday with games against No. 12 San Diego State (4:00 p.m. EST) and No. 20 Michigan (7:45 p.m. EST).
Game 1 – Brown 10, Mercyhurst 8
Kolokotronis scored four goals to lead Brown past Mercyhurst, 10-8, in the morning as the Bears beat the Lakers for the second time this season after defeating the Mercyhurst, 16-7, on Feb. 28 at Bucknell.
Rosen, junior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.), and junior Mai Ly (Los Angeles, Calif.) each scored two goals in support of Kolokotronis. Dodd totaled three assists and two steals while freshman Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted two assists, two steals, and two ejections drawn. Junior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) drew a team-high four ejections.
Dakan made 10 saves, and the Bears' defense held Mercyhurst to one goal in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.
Brown opened up the game with a 4-1 lead in the first quarter behind two goals from Kolokotronis and one tally apiece from Dodd and Ly. Ly and Kolokotronis each posted one goal later in the period to give the Bears a 6-3 edge at the end of the first.
The Lakers responded in the second stanza, registering the frame's only two goals to cut their deficit to 6-5 heading into halftime.
Rosen netted the second half's first goal, and Dodd added a marker shortly thereafter to push the Bears' lead to 8-5. Another goal from Rosen put Brown up 9-7, and Kolokotronis' fourth tally gave the squad a 10-7 advantage through three quarters.

Game 2 – Villanova 11, Brown 10 (OT)
Crowley netted a season-high six goals, but Brown fell to Villanova in overtime, 11-10, in its second game of the day at Hartwick.
Crowley tied the game at 10-10 with 19 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Wildcats scored in the second portion of the added time to take the win.
Rosen posted two goals while freshman Heilman and Kolokotronis each added a single goal. Dodd dished out a team-best four assists, and Rosen drew a team-high four ejections. In goal, Dakan stopped 15 shots.
Each side registered two goals in the first quarter with Crowley logging both of the goals for the Bears.
Neither team held a lead larger than two goals in the second quarter as the clubs traded goals. Rosen and Crowley tallied back-to-back goals midway through the period, but Villanova countered with a 3-0 run to pull ahead 6-4. Heilman found the back of the net with 11 seconds to go in the quarter to bring Brown within 6-5 at halftime.
Brown outscored Villanova, 4-1, in the third quarter to take a 9-7 edge. Kolokotronis started the run with a goal less than two minutes into the period with Crowley then netting two markers to give the Bears an 8-6 lead. Rosen charted the period's final goal to stake the Bears to their 9-7 lead.
Villanova used another 3-0 run to take a 10-9 advantage in the fourth quarter, recording the game-tying goal at the 2:36 mark and the go-ahead goal with 49 seconds on the clock. Crowley tied the contest 30 seconds later, but the Wildcats prevailed in the extra session.

Game 3 – Hartwick 13, Brown 11
Crowley netted three goals, and another three Bears posted two goals apiece, but Brown dropped a 13-11 decision to host Hartwick in the squad's nightcap.
Heilman, Kolokotronis, and Rosen each scored two goals while Santiago and senior Rebecca Zak (Carlsbad, Calif.) notched one goal apiece. Dodd registered team highs in assists (five) and ejections drawn (four) while Heilman drew three ejections. Dakan added eight saves.
The Bears captured a 3-1 lead after the first quarter as Santiago registered the contest's first tally before Crowley and Heilman netted the period's last two goals.
Hartwick worked its way back into the game in the second stanza, outscoring Brown 5-3 in the period. Kolokotronis gave the Bears a 4-3 lead with the team's first goal of the quarter before the visitors fell behind 6-4. Crowley and Kolokotronis each scored goals inside of the frame's final two minutes to tie the score at 6-6 entering halftime.
The two teams traded goals in the third quarter with markers from Rosen, Zak, and Heilman allowing the Bears to remain within 10-9 heading into the final frame.
After a Hawk goal, Crowley scored with 5:52 to play to bring Brown within 11-10. The Bears pulled within 12-11 on a Rosen goal with 3:26 remaining, but Hartwick registered the game's last goal with 3:01 left.
