
Women's Water Polo Beats VMI, Falls to No. 9 San Jose State

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University women's water polo beat Virginia Military Institute, 10-3, before falling to No. 9 San Jose State University, 13-2, at its first day of competition at the Harvard Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Harvard's Blodgett Pool.
The Bears (6-3) topped the Keydets (1-5) for their fourth straight victory prior to dropping a decision to the Spartans (14-5) who also beat Iona, 17-5, earlier in the day.
Junior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) led Brown with four goals over the two contests while freshman goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) and the Bears' defense held VMI without a goal over the game's first 21:33.
Next, Brown continues play at the Harvard Invitational tomorrow with games against Marist (9:15 a.m.) and Iona (3:30 p.m.).
Game 1 – Brown 10, VMI 3
Santiago netted three goals to lead six Brown goal scorers as the Bears beat Virginia Military Institute, 10-3, in its first game of the invitational.
Senior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) posted two goals while sophomore Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.), junior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.), freshman Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.), senior Emily Klein (Pleasanton, Calif.), and sophomore Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) each scored one goal.
Dakan made 12 saves in net and added an assist while Crowley posted a team-high four steals. Dodd totaled two assists and two steals, and Rosen notched three steals and two assists.
The Bears held a 5-0 halftime lead and extended their edge to 7-0 as Dakan and the team's defense did not allow the Keydets to record a goal until 2:27 remained in the third quarter.
Santiago started the game's scoring less than a minute into the contest, and Crowley gave Brown a 2-0 lead 30 seconds later.
Holding a 2-0 edge heading into the second quarter, the Bears notched all three of the period's goals to go up 5-0 at the break. Santiago and Crowley posted back-to-back goals midway through the stanza before Heilman scored with 1:25 to play in the half.
Dodd opened the second half's scoring with a goal at the 5:46 mark of the third frame. Rosen logged the Bears' seventh goal with under three minutes to play in the quarter. VMI scored two goals later in the quarter in between a Kolokotronis tally.
Santiago and Klein netted Brown's goals in the fourth frame while the Keydets tacked on a single marker.

Game 2 – No. 9 San Jose State 13, Brown 2
Brown fell in its second game at the tournament, 13-2, to No. 9 nationally-ranked San Jose State.
Crowley and Santiago scored one goal apiece for the Bears. Brown totaled 17 steals as a team with Kolokotronis collecting a team-best four thefts. Crowley and Dodd each notched three steals.
Dakan stopped 10 shots in net to compile 22 saves between the two games.
The Spartans opened the game with a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. Santiago netted Brown's first goal at the 5:47 mark of the second frame to pull the Bears within 3-1. San Jose State posted the second quarter's next three goals to take a 6-1 lead at the half.
Starting the third quarter, Crowley scored less than 30 seconds into the frame to bring Brown within 6-2 – the closest it would come the rest of the way.
San Jose State registered three goals over the duration of the third frame to capture a 9-2 edge and added four goals in the fourth stanza.
