PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite a valiant second half rally, the Brown women's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a five-goal halftime deficit, as #13 Penn outlasted the Bears, 9-7, on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson Field.
The Bears suffered their first setback of the season to drop to 3-1 (0-1 Ivy), while the Quakers improve to 4-0 (1-0 Ivy) with the win.
Janie Gion (Northfield, Ill.), Marissa Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.), and Yuna Hur (Stony Brook, N.Y.) all recorded a pair of goals for the Bears on Saturday.
Brown goaltender Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.), the league's reigning Co-Defensive Player of the Week, kept the Bears in it with strong play as she totaled nine saves to fall to 3-1. Lucy Ferguson improved her record to 4-0 after making eight stops, including six in the first half to help stake the Quakers to an insurmountable halftime lead.
Things looked good for the Bears early on as freshman Yuna Hur got the home team on the board just 38 seconds in, as she fired home a rebound off Abby Bunting's (Wellesley, Mass.) free position shot.
From there, the Quakers closed out the half on a 6-0 run on the strength of goals from Nina Corcoran, Tory Bensen, Lindsey Smith, and Iris Williamson. Bensen and Corcoran each finished the day with hat tricks. Ferguson and the Penn defense stymied the Bears in the first half, as Brown struggled to get any good looks at the goal despite two man-up opportunities.
Brown found its rhythm in the second half, outscoring the Quakers 6-3 in the final stanza. Hudgins' tumbling goal just 1:58 in preceded Richael Walsh's (Westwood, Mass.) tally that drew the Bears within three at 6-3. Goals by Corcoran and Smith gave Penn an 8-3 before Brown ended the game on a 4-1 run.
Hur and Gion each added their team high eighth goals in the second half, with Gion's strike coming with just 10 seconds remaining to make it a 9-7 contest.
Penn outshot the Bears 23-22, but Brown held a huge 13-5 advantage in draw controls. Each squad connected on two free position attempts, while Penn forced 15 turnovers to Brown's 10.
Up next, the Bears will host Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt at Stevenson Field beginning at 4 p.m.
