PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Marissa Hudgins' goal with 11 seconds remaining in regulation gave the Brown women's lacrosse team a dramatic 11-10 win over Holy Cross on Tuesday at Stevenson Field.
The Bears and goaltender Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.) improve to 4-1 this season, while the Crusaders fall to 1-6 overall this season.
Brown got a hat trick and an assist each from Lauren Toy (Kentfield, Calif.) and Richael Walsh (Westwood, Mass.), while Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Abby Bunting (Wellesley, Mass.) each found the back of the net twice.
With Brown holding a 10-7 lead with just under four minutes to play, three consecutive goals from Holy Cross knotted the game at 10 with 1:57 to play. Kaitlin Concilio brought the Crusaders back within one, before Walsh and Bunting were both sent off with yellow cards, leaving the Bears down two players.
Mary Patalita scored the equalizer and Holy Cross looked poised to steal the game with Bunting still serving a penalty, but was stymied when Roddy vacated her crease and intercepted a pass, rushing the ball up-field for the clear and giving Brown possession in the final minute.
After Hudgins kept getting forced to the outside, the freshman powered to the goal and cashed in through traffic with 11 seconds remaining to give the Bears the win.
Yuna Hur (Stony Brook, N.Y.) accounted for the other Brown goal on Thursday, as her marker put the Bears up 7-4 with 25:14 to play.
The Bears dominated the draws for the second consecutive contest, holding an 18-4 edge led by Alyssa DiBona's (Media, Pa.) career high seven draw controls. Walsh, Kerianne Hunt (Alamo, Calif.), and Bunting each picked up three ground balls, while freshman Bri Irons (Wallingford, Pa.) picked up her first collegiate assist on Toy's goal for 1:04 left in the half.
The teams combined for 41 turnovers, with the Bears committing a season high 23. Brown also notched season bests in assists (8) and caused turnovers (12) on Thursday, including a perfect 13-of-13 on clears.
Up next, the Bears will conclude their three-game homestand in a crucial Ivy match against Yale on Saturday beginning at noon.
