
Defense Leads Women's Water Polo Past Sagehens, Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Brown University women's water polo's defense allowed just four goals over two games as the Bears beat Pomona-Pitzer, 5-3, and defeated Claremont-Mudd Scripps, 7-1, on Tuesday at Haldeman Pool and Axelrood Pool respectively.
The Bears (13-10) gave up just two goals in the normal flow of play against the Sagehens (9-9), the top-ranked team in Division III, and shut out the Athenas (4-14), the fourth-ranked team in DIII, over the game's final 31:23.
Freshman goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) led the way for the Bears, making 15 saves in the win against Pomona-Pitzer. Sophomore Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) paced Brown with four goals between the two games.
Next, Brown plays a pair of games at Cal Baptist on Thursday, facing the hosts at 4 p.m. EST and squaring off with Concordia University, Irvine at 7 p.m. EST.
Game 1 – Brown 5, Pomona-Pitzer 3
Dakan made 15 saves and allowed just two goals in the normal flow of play to lead Brown past Pomona-Pitzer, 5-3, in the team's first game of the day.
Senior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) scored two goals while junior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.) and sophomores Crowley and Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) each posted one goal.
Kolokotronis added two assists, Crowley notched two steals, and freshman Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and junior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) each drew two ejections.
The Bears opened up the game with a 2-1 lead after the first quarter behind tallies from Crowley and Rosen. Morgan McCracken notched the goal for the Sagehens.
Alyssa Woodward tied the game at 2-2, scoring on a penalty shot for Pomona-Pitzer in the second quarter.
Dodd then put the Bears up 3-2 with under three minutes to play in the third quarter, and Rosen gave Brown a 4-2 edge at halftime on a goal with 29 seconds to play in the second quarter.
After McCracken pulled the Sagehens within 4-3 with 3:51 to go in the third quarter, Kolokotronis netted the game's last goal with 2:11 to play in the third to stake Brown to its 5-3 lead.
Dakan blanked the Sagehens in the fourth quarter, making three saves. Ahsha Earwood registered six saves in the game for Pomona-Pitzer.

Game 2 – Brown 7, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1
The Bears defense allowed a goal 37 seconds into the game – then did not give up a goal the rest of the way as Brown beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 7-1, in its nightcap.
Crowley scored three goals, Kolokotronis netted a pair of tallies, and Santiago and sophomore Anne Warner (Marin, Calif.) each added a single marker.
After the Athenas posted the contest's first goal, the Bears responded with the first period's other four goals. Santiago started the run at the 6:47 mark before Kolokotronis scored just over a minute later. Warner and Crowley closed out the team's scoring in the quarter.
Crowley notched the second stanza's only goal just over a minute into the period to give Brown a 5-1 lead at the half.
Brown tacked on two goals in the third quarter behind tallies from Crowley and Kolokotronis.
