Providence, R.I. - Junior attackman Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD) scored the game-winning goal with 2:46 left in overtime and sophomore attackman Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY) scored eight goals to lead 12th-ranked Brown to a dramatic 16-15 overtime win over Marist Tuesday evening at Stevenson Field.
The Bears improve to 7-1 with the win, while Marist falls to 5-3 overall.
Bellistri's game-winning goal, his second of the game, came on a pass from senior Nick Piroli (Black River, NY) on a man-up opportunity, giving the Bears their best start to the season since 1991.
"We are certainly fortunate to come away with a victory tonight," commented Brown head coach Lars Tiffany. "I cannot fully explain how impressed I was with Marist's determination to keep fighting its way back into this game. It is a testament to their program and men. As for Brown lacrosse, we continue to learn the positives and negatives of the quick-strike offense. When we are on, as we were in the first 20 minutes, we can score goals in bunches. When we are not clicking, we play a lot of defense and see good shots from our opponents."
"Dylan Molloy was exceptional tonight, as was the play of our faceoff specialist Will Gural. For any program, to have a faceoff man who can score goals is a dangerous weapon to possess."
Molloy, the nation's leading scorer, tied his career scoring high with eight goals on 20 shots, while also adding an assist. Piroli finished with two goals and two assists, while Bears' junior face-off specialist Will Gural (Haverford, PA) added two goals. Gural also won 23-of-34 face-offs.
Bears' junior goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) registered nine saves, while Marist goalie Dave Scarcello made 13 saves in net.
Drew Nesmith paced the Red Foxes with four goals, while Michael Begley and Colin Joka added three goals each.
Brown never trailed in the game, but led by as many as nine goals, 11-2, with 8:06 left in the second quarter on a Malloy score.
Marist scored the last three goals of the second quarter and the first of the third quarter, a score by Joka, to pull to within 11-7 of the Bears at the 10:27 mark.
A goal off the face-off by Gural temporarily stopped the momentum, giving Brown a 12-7 advantage. But Marist rallied with five straight goals, tying the game, 12-12, on a goal by Gannon Morrison with 12:49 left in the game.
Consecutive goals by Bellistri and Molloy lifted the Bears to a 14-12 advantage with 6:57 remaining, but Radin scored for the Red Foxes to pull to within 14-13 just 13 seconds later.
Molloy's eighth goal at the 6:14 mark put Brown back up by two goals, 15-13. Undaunted, Radin scored with 6:13 remaining and Nesmith found the back of the net with 2:53 remaining to send the game into overtime, 15-15.
#12 Brown returns to Ivy League action for a key matchup with #9 Princeton on Sunday, March 29 in Princeton, NJ. Face-off is 11am in a game televised on ESPNU.
